Last Neanderthals of southern Iberia may not have coexisted with modern humans, new data suggest
Feb. 4, 2013 ? The theory that the last Neanderthals -- Homo neanderthalensis -- persisted in southern Iberia at the same time that modern humans -Homo sapiens- advanced in the northern part of the peninsula, has been widely accepted by the scientific community during the last twenty years. An international study, in which researchers of the Spanish National Distance Education University (UNED) participate, questions this hypothesis.
"It is improbable that the last Neanderthals of central and southern Iberia would have persisted until such a late date, approximately 30,000 years ago, as we thought before the new dates appeared," assures Jes?s F. Jord?, researcher of the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology of the UNED and co-author of the study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
The scientific team, with researchers from Oxford University (United Kingdom), Australia National University, UNED (Madrid), University of La Laguna (Tenerife), Archaeological Museum of Lucena (C?rdoba), and National Museum of National History (Paris), applied a new technique in order to repeat analyses at the sites of Jarama VI (Guadalajara) and Zafarraya (Malaga), considered up to now two of the last refuges of the Iberian Neanderthals.
To the usual radiocarbon dating method, the ultrafiltration protocol was added, which aims to purify the collagen of the bone samples from contaminants. The AMS dating technique was applied that requires minimum sample quantities.
The scientists, by applying this new method, assure that the neanderthal occupation of the sites did not last until as late as previously thought; instead it should be placed approximately 45,000 years ago.
"The problem with radiocarbon dating alone is that it does not provide reliable dates older than 50,000 years," explains Jord?. An additional problem is contamination; the older the samples are the more residues are accumulated. If contaminants are not removed the obtained dates are incorrect.
Re-writing Prehistory books
New analyses were applied to bone remains found in the archaeological deposits in association with Middle Paleolithic stone artifacts. Bones bearing clear signs of human manipulation (cut marks, marks of percussion or intentional breakage) were selected in order to rule out possible intrusions by carnivores.
Despite the fact that samples were collected from numerous sites in southern Iberia, it was only possible to date those of Jarama VI and Zafarraya, as the remaining samples did not contain enough collagen to be dated.
Cueva Ant?n (Murcia) is the only site that still provides recent dates in accordance with what has until now been postulated in relation to the persistence of the Neanderthals. However, neither the technological remains are clearly related to the Neanderthals nor are the dated charcoal samples perfectly associated with the lithics.
In view of the new data according to Jord? "prehistory books would need revision," especially as new results become available. "Although it is still controversial to change the theory in force, the new concept, which presents new data indicating that Neanderthals and H. sapiens did not co-exist in Iberia, is becoming accepted" he adds.

I have to defend the question. At one time flight attendants, once known as stewardesses, had to meet certain standards of weight, beauty, youth, and chest, waist and hip measurements. It was a given that appearance affected their job. Now flight attendants are judged on their ability to perform social work in the air. The same could be said of cheerleading; not that they would have to perform social work, but dance routines and gymnastics, plus this woman was 1.6 pounds over the weight limit. Standards of beauty change are constantly changing.

All in readiness for Pancake Day | Crosslight

Throughout the last decade Pancake Day ? UnitingCare Victoria and Tasmania?s annual fundraising event ? has seen stacks of pancakes sold and more than $1.5 million raised.
Those funds have helped UnitingCare provide practical support to those in need including vulnerable children and adults, families in crisis, young parents and other disadvantaged groups. This year there will be a particular focus on helping families in need.
On 12 February, Shrove Tuesday, congregations from throughout the Synod as well as community groups and workplaces will get out their frypans and make pancakes by the thousands to sell.
In Launceston, the day will have a festive atmosphere with a special guest appearance from the Pancake Day mascot Penny Pancake, who will travel from Melbourne for the big event.
State Health Minister Michelle O?Byrne will flip the first pancake and members from the city?s four congregations will gather at Civic Square.
As well as selling pancakes they will conduct the annual pancake races, which attract up to a dozen four-member teams from local businesses, government agencies and community groups.
They will all be seeking to knock off the reigning champions, Scotch Oakburn College, which entered a seriously fit team last year to grab bragging rights in an event which has grown from simply being a bit of fun to a fair dinkum contest. As well as the popular teams? race, pre-schoolers and those over 80 will have their own events this year.
The activities ? the brainchild of Pilgrim minister Rev Tony Duncan ?will run from 10 am until 2 pm and have become an integral part of summer in the Northern Tasmanian city.
?It is a way of getting the community involved (with the day),? Rev Duncan said.
?We expect to get at least a dozen teams this year.?
Annually, the day raises between $1500 and $2000 for UnitingCare Tasmania. Mr Duncan said it was easy to get volunteers because many knew first-hand the work of the agency in the north of the state. UnitingCare director Charles Gibson said Pancake Day was a fantastic opportunity to bring people together for a fun day and support UnitingCare?s work in helping families.
?Many families, through no fault of their own, find themselves in crisis as a result of various issues which can range from homelessness and financial hardship, illness to abusive relationships,? he said.
?We are asking for people to participate in Pancake Day to help us support families through the countless services our agencies provide.?

Sharon Hope Church bands together to support member Jose Matos
As the entire church sang ?This Little Light of Mine? together with Jose Matos, the spirit of a community at Hope Church was clear.
?If you have an extra kidney, I can use one,? Matos joked with the crowd, eliciting a bubble of laughter from the all ages audience. Though he kept his tone light, the suggestion was all too real for Matos.
Currently, the former Marine and Vietnam veteran is waiting to be called to Louisville, KY, where he is a potential recipient for a new kidney. The Hope Church member and preacher, who also receives regular dialysis treatments, hopes to continue his work preaching around the country with the help of a healthy new organ, even joking about how convenient it would be to have an organ store.
In order to ease the financial burden of Matos?s potential call to Kentucky, Hope Church hosted ?A Night of Inspiration? this past Saturday, Jan. 26, to collect donations and raise awareness about Matos and his story.
?We wanted to do something to show him our love and support,? Tina Lopez, a member of the church and one of the event?s organizers, said over the sounds of acoustic guitar coming from the altar. ?We want to be a hope and support for someone in need, so we thought we?d take a leap of faith and try to plan something.?
The evening, which lasted from 7-9 p.m. and consisted of several volunteer musical acts and an intermission complete with snacks and punch, came together with the help of everyone from Sharon High School to ?friends of friends of church members? who just wanted to support a good cause, as Lopez explained.
Musical selections involved everything from an a capella group to saxophone jazz to Matos himself performing for the participant audience. When an act requested ?more voices? for their songs, the people filling the pews were quick to join them.
Even during the brief intermission, the crowd gathered together in the church basement over sweets and drinks, laughing and congratulating those who had already performed.
Despite the seriousness of the cause that brought them together, the attendees of ?A Night of Inspiration? were nothing if not positive, joining together to help someone Lopez described as ?part of [the] church family.?
?There?s always hope for everybody,? she explained. ?No one should ever feel hopeless.?
Donations for Jose Matos can be made as checks written to Hope Church with a memo stating that they are for ?Matos kidney transplant fund? and will be accepted at the church.
