Integrating Marketing and Communications to Advance Webster's ...

Webster Global Marketing and Communications

The division coordinates strategic communications and marketing.

It?s been six months since the former administrative offices of Marketing and Public Affairs were brought under one roof. As our role and responsibilities continue to evolve and grow, we?d like to take this opportunity to explain what we do and why we do it.

Global Marketing and Communications is a Webster University administrative division created in June 2011. It combined two existing administrative areas, Public Affairs and Marketing, and embraced the new name to more accurately reflect the global nature of its work.

It leads a unified effort to advance the university?s global mission and coordinates multiple aspects of the university?s institutional and administrative unit strategic communications and marketing. It includes four strategic offices: Creative Services; Digital Marketing and Communications; Strategic Communications and Public Relations.

The purpose of this division is to build reputation and brand awareness for Webster by telling consistent and compelling stories through various communication channels including print, online, social media, advertising and traditional media. As awareness of Webster increases, so too, will the value of a Webster degree. Webster graduates will be more competitive in the marketplace and Webster will become more attractive for prospective students, community members and corporations.

As this new integrated division launches, processes and procedures are being implemented to improve efficiencies and effectiveness and to stay current with how higher education marketing and communications is changing. Here are some of the changes:

Creative Services

This unit is comprised of writers, designers, photographers and videographers. These professionals are developing a new creative brand platform for the institution, reflecting the powerful dynamics of the Webster brand: St. Louis, Global, Metro, Military and Online. This brand will be reflected in future advertising and on the Webster University website. This office will unify a consistent creative approach and develop brand guidelines for all Webster colleges, schools and locations.

Digital Marketing and Communications

Development of the new Webster Website is underway. A new content management system is being implemented and all colleges, schools and locations will reflect a consistent and unified Webster University brand. This office also manages the University?s social media sites and authors/monitors Webster?s Social Media Guidelines.

Strategic Communications

With campus locations around the world, internal communications and human resource communications are vital to Webster. This office produces Webster Today, the dynamic university blog, telling the stories from the diverse perspectives and locations that make Webster a great place to work and study. Strategic Communications drafts and updates Webster?s Editorial Style Guide. Use of the Editorial Style Guide helps to ensure consistency in how the University communicates.

Public Relations

This office manages media relations on behalf of the University and works to ensure that members of the media have access to accurate and consistent information. Members of the media are encouraged to go through this office in order to access the appropriate subject matter experts for the stories they are writing. The Public Relations office also writes media stories and works to ensure media exposure for Webster in local, regional, national and international media venues.

Obama calls for funding to boost science education

President Barack Obama called on Tuesday for millions of dollars in new funding to improve math and science education, an effort he said would be crucial to the nation's long-term success.

Obama said his upcoming budget proposal, set to be released next week, would include a request for $80 million from Congress for a new Education Department competition to support math and science teacher preparation programs. Obama made a similar request to Congress last year but the measure didn't pass.

Separately, he announced $22 million in investments from the private sector to support math and science efforts. Among the organizations committing fresh funding are Google and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

Obama said a renewed focus on math and science education should be an American imperative.

"The belief that we belong on the cutting edge of innovation, that's an idea as old as America itself," Obama said. "We're a nation of thinkers, dreamers, believers in a better tomorrow."

Obama has set a goal of preparing more than 100,000 math and science teachers and training a million additional math, technology, engineering and science graduates over the next decade.

Science fair at White House
Seeking to highlight the benefits of math and science education, Obama hosted a White House science fair earlier Tuesday, featuring projects designed by more than 100 students from across the country. The projects included a robot that helps senior citizens connect with their families via Skype, and a portable disaster relief shelter that could be used to house people who have been displaced from their homes.

"It's not every day you have robots running all over your house," Obama said of the science fair. "I'm trying to figure out how you got through the metal detectors."

During his visit to the fair, Obama helped 14-year-old Joey Hudy fire off the Extreme Marshmallow Cannon, one of the Phoenix student's inventions.

"The Secret Service is going to be mad at me about this," Obama joked. Afterward, he told his audience that shooting a marshmallow through the air gun was "very exciting."

Hudy, a frequent exhibitor at Maker Faires around the country, has already started a small business to sell another invention, his LED Cube Microcontroller Shield.

The president said the students participating in the science fair were an inspiration, and gave him confidence that the nation's best days were yet to come.

"You're getting America in shape to win the future," Obama said.

Facebook surrenders its privacy in IPO documents

(AP) ? Facebook is baring its business soul.

The unveiling came late Wednesday when the company that depends on people to share their lives online filed its plans to raise $5 billion in an initial public offering of stock. It's a revelatory moment that prospective investors, curious competitors and nosy reporters have been awaiting for two years. During that time, Facebook established itself as a communications hub and emerged as a threat to the Internet's most powerful company, Google Inc.

As with almost anything crafted by a bunch of lawyers and bankers, the 197-page prospectus that Facebook filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission is filled with boilerplate legalese and mind-numbing numbers.

But there were some juicy details in there, too.

Above all, the documents confirmed what everyone had been hearing: Facebook is very profitable and getting stronger. The company Mark Zuckerberg started with some friends in 2004 has seen its annual revenue soar from $777 million in 2009 to $3.7 billion last year. Facebook's earnings have grown at a similar rate too, ballooning from $122 million in 2009 to $668 million last year.

Facebook ended 2011 with $3.9 billion in cash. That's a relatively small amount compared to the nearly $45 billion that Google has in the bank.

Facebook's prosperity has been fueled by a steady expansion of its audience, making its website a more attractive marketing vehicle for ads, which account for most of the company's revenue. Facebook ended last year with 845 million users, up 39 percent from 608 million at the end of 2010. Those users share their interests and preferences prodigiously. Facebook recorded a daily average of 2.7 billion "likes" and comments during the final three months of last year.

Facebook has become so addictive that more than half its audience ? 483 million users ? log in every day.

Facebook's revenue total disappointed some people who pored through the documents. One reason: The company generates about $4.39 in revenue per user. "That is a surprisingly low number," said University of Notre Dame finance professor Tim Loughran, who studies IPOs. Google's annual revenue of nearly $38 billion works out to more than $30 per user of its services.

"Facebook needs to find more ways to get revenue from their users," Loughran said.

Facebook listed its most promising expansion opportunities as Brazil, Germany, India, Japan, Russia and South Korea. The company, based in Menlo Park, Calif., eventually hopes to make its service available in China if it can navigate rules requiring online content to be censored if the Chinese government considers it to be objectionable or obscene.

The IPO filing gives some clue when Facebook is likely to surpass 1 billion users. If it can add users at roughly the same pace as last year, Facebook should surpass the 1 billion mark this summer.

As it is, Facebook already generates 44 percent of its revenue outside the U.S. The company is also developing other sources of revenue beyond online advertising faster than Google. Advertising accounted for 85 percent of Facebook's revenue last year. It made up 96 percent of Google's. Facebook's other revenue sources include the 30 percent cut of sales it takes from game makers and other external applications companies that sell things on its website.

The big question is whether Facebook's numbers are impressive enough to fetch the lofty IPO price. It's still too early in the process for Facebook to reveal how much it intends to ask for its shares, but Wednesday's filing provides some clues. Facebook valued its Class B common stock at $29.73 at the end of December, down slightly from appraisals of $30.07 in June and September. If this unfolds like most hot IPOs, Facebook will probably try to sell its shares at a premium. That could mean an IPO price in the $35 to $40 range. Investor demand, though, ultimately will dictate the pricing.

Facebook still hasn't listed how many outstanding shares it has, but the documents make it possible to make a rough estimate of the company's market value at the end of last year. Financial notes in the filing show Facebook calculated it had about 2.9 billion fully diluted shares at the end of December. That works out to a market value of about $86 billion, based on Facebook's $29.73-per-share self-appraisal.

At that price, the nearly 534 million shares that the 27-year-old Zuckerberg owns are worth about $16 billion. The filing indicates Zuckerberg will sell an unspecified number of shares in the IPO to cover a tax bill for exercising a stock option to buy 120 million shares. Zuckerberg has been collecting a $500,000 salary but that will fall to one dollar next year at his own request, according to the filing.

Other big winners in the IPO include: Facebook co-founder and old Zuckerberg friend, Dustin Moskovitz, who owns nearly 134 million shares; venture capital firm Accel Partners, which owns 201 million shares; Russian investor DST Global Ltd., which owns 131 million shares; and former PayPal CEO Peter Thiel, who owns nearly 45 million shares.

Hundreds of other Facebook employees could become millionaires because they receive stock as part of their compensation. Facebook has about 3,200 employees now, nearly 2,000 more than it did two years ago.

Facebook also shared some of its biggest worries in the filing. Among other things, it cited Google's ability to use its dominance in Internet search to promote its Google Plus social network. Facebook also frets the possibility that regulators in Europe and the U.S. may impose tougher privacy rules that would make it more difficult for the company to stockpile information about its users.

Iran says will attack any country used to strike its soil (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran will attack any country whose territory is used by "enemies" of the Islamic state to launch a military strike against its soil, the deputy head of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards told the semi-official Fars news agency on Sunday.

"Any spot used by the enemy for hostile operations against Iran, will be subjected to retaliatory aggression by our armed forces," Hossein Salami said, during military maneuvers.

The Revolutionary Guards began the two-day ground exercises on Saturday as a show of military might as tension rises between Tehran and the West over Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Iranian media said it was a small-scale exercise in southern Iran.

The United States and Israel, Iran's arch enemies, have not ruled out a military strike against the country if diplomacy fails to resolve the standoff. Iran says its nuclear program is purely peaceful, rather than aimed at developing weapons.

Iran has warned that its response to any such strike will be "painful," threatening to target Israel, and U.S. bases in the Gulf, along with closing the vital oil shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz.
