Mexico upsets U.S. in Pan Am Basketball

The gold-medal drought in men's basketball for the Untied States at the Pan American Games will last at least another four years after a 71-55 loss to Mexico in Saturday's semi-finals.

The United States has not won Pan American gold since 1983.

Mexico is headed in the other direction. The Mexicans last won a medal in 1991 ? a silver ? and are now guaranteed of at least second place.

More related to this story

Jovan Harris led Mexico with 15 points, while Lorenzo Mata added 12 and Paul Stoll scored eight. Harris and Stoll were born in the U.S. but carry Mexican nationality.

?I can't say it wasn't special beating the United States,? Stoll said. ?I had never played against an American team.?

Leo Lyons scored 13 to lead the United States, which is using players from the NBA Development League.

?Even though we lost it was fun. It's something you can bank some memories on,? forward Renaldo Major said. ?The crowd was crazy. ... It was a great atmosphere and I loved it and I wouldn't mind playing in here again.?

The Americans needed comeback victories in group play against the Dominican Republic and Brazil to reach the semis. They trailed 39-24 at halftime Saturday but couldn't rally.

?Mexico just kept coming at us and we didn't make the shots when we needed to,? coach Nate Tibbetts said.

Mexico will meet either Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic in Sunday's final. The Americans will play for bronze against the loser of that game.

?We got to bounce back,? Tibbetts said. ?Obviously we are disappointed as anyone would be, but tomorrow's game is a big one. Not a lot people can say they won a bronze medal.?

The raucous atmosphere gave Mexico an advantage, although Tibbetts said his players enjoyed the wild cheering and the energy of fans dressed mostly in green and waving red, white and green Mexican flags.

?That was a high intensity atmosphere,? he said. ?Mexico has done an excellent job putting this on, and this was a great setting for a game. As players and coaches you love to go in and play the host team in a big game and you have to take your hat off to Mexico.?

Culinary Union spearheads ?the UFC is anti-gay? campaign, Perez Hilton now on board

Culinary Union spearheads ?the UFC is anti-gay? campaign, Perez Hilton now on board

Who thought the UFC's battle to get into New York would come to this? The Culinary Union in New York and gossip guru Perez Hilton are lashing out at the fight promotion claiming it's anti-gay.

The mixed martial arts fighting promotion is still unable to get fights licensed in New York. Owner Lorenzo Fertitta and president Dana White haven't hidden their feelings about the real culprit in the battle. Both have pointed the finger of blame at the state's powerful Culinary Union.

Last week in a letter to Anheuser-Busch, the union fired back saying the UFC allows homophobic behavior from it fighters and personalities.

  • In recent videos, UFC light heavyweight Quinton "Rampage" Jackson repeatedly urged Japanese fans to repeat an anti-gay slur.' The fans, who do not appear to understand English, repeated the anti-gay slur at Jackson's urging. In one video, Jackson instructed a Japanese man to say, "Goodbye, I want you to piss on my face."
  • In an expletive-filled video rant posted on YouTube.com, UFC president Dana White used an anti-gay slur, saying, "Whoever gave you that quote is a [expletive] and a [expletive] faggot and a [expletive] liar and everything else. He also uttered the "F" word a total of 34 times, the "S" word 4 times, and referred to a female sports journalist as a "[expletive] dumb bitch."
  • According to the Los Angeles Times, "Rampage" Jackson shouted "every conceivable gay slur" at a movie crew member of "The A-Team" who had called him a homophobic epithet. He was also quoted in the article saying, "Acting is kind of gay. It makes you soft."
  • In a recent UFC promotional video, Michael Bisping, a UFC middleweight fighter and coach on the reality television show "The Ultimate Fighter," screamed an anti-gay slur at his opponent. In a media conference call, Bisping tried to. smear an opposing-coach. on "The Ultimate Fighter" by saying that his opponent had a "gay chiropractor" on his staff."
  • Joe Rogan, who does commentary for televised UFC events, recently used a homophobic slur while referring to a MMA blogger.' Rogan also to referred to an MMA blogger as a part of the female anatomy. According to sportswriter Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports, Rogan then wrote on a blog, "Never did I imagine that so many people would get their panties in a bunch about the use of the word [expletive] to describe a female blogger."

Now Hilton, the openly-gay blogger, is firing shots at the promotion.

Ugh! We are not happy to hear about this. While sports organizations like the NBA and MLB are working to end homophobia, others like the NHL seem to be tolerating it. Unfortunately, the UFC (Utlimate Fighting Championship) seems to be flat out endorsing anti-gay bigotry!

Some of these incidents go back a few years, so it looks like the Culinary Union waited for an opportune time to go on the attack. It just so happens that the UFC is debuting on network television in less than a month on Fox.

GOP showcasing Hispanic stars (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are popular, relative political newcomers in presidential battleground states.

The rising GOP stars are also Hispanics, something the Republican Party makes no secret of hoping to capitalize on in the upcoming national elections.

National Republicans are inviting them on international fact finding trips, courting them for high-profile public appearances and whispering their names as possibilities for vice presidential nominations.

"They represent the American Dream," said Fred Malek, founder of the conservative American Action Network and its spinoff, the Hispanic Leadership Network, whose mission is to bring Hispanics into the party. "They represent what America is all about how to succeed. How to pull yourself up by the bootstraps, reach success and show leadership. They all share that."

But wooing the Hispanic vote takes more than floating candidates with Latino names, as was obvious last month when the Hispanic Leadership Network held a conference here. Martinez, after delivering the keynote dinner speech, was heckled by a group of some 50 young Latinos upset by her aggressive attempts to repeal a law that lets illegal immigrants get state driver's licenses.

"Stop the Hate," the protesters yelled while a table of conference attendees stood up and began chanting "USA, USA."

The scene underscores the complexities both political parties face as they set their sights on the nation's biggest and fastest growing but traditionally Democratic-leaning minority group ? which is as diverse as Martinez, Sandoval and Rubio and the swing states they represent. Rubio is the son of Cuban exiles, a group that tends to have widely different views on immigration than Mexican-Americans in the Southwest and border-state Hispanics who trace their roots to early Spanish settlers.

"It's just as dangerous to stereotype a Latino or a Latina voter as it is to assume that all white voters think and act the same way," said Dan Schnur, a former GOP strategist who now teaches at University of Southern California.

While having a Hispanic on a Republican ballot will never sway hard core Democrats and many traditionally liberal leaning groups, Schnur says it may cause some voters to give the GOP a second look.

And the Republican Party sees an opportunity to lure more moderate and conservative Hispanics with pro-family, pro-jobs, strong work ethic themes that appeal to immigrants.

"Here is the new frontier of immigrants," Malek said. "The people who came to this country for the same reason my grandparents came to this country at the turn of the last century -- to make their way and build their future."

Martinez is the granddaughter of illegal Mexican immigrants and a long-time southern New Mexico prosecutor who has alienated immigrant rights groups with her stance on the driver's license issue. She represents a state that is nearly 50 percent Hispanic, and one that tends to be more tolerant of Mexican immigrants ? legal or illegal ? than neighbors like Arizona. And while Martinez is the nation's first Latina governor, Hispanic politicians are far from a novelty here.

Sandoval, a former state attorney general and federal judge who took office the same time as Martinez, has focused less on his heritage and has largely avoided hot-button issues like immigration. He has also been more welcoming of the national spotlight.

He traveled at the invitation of the Pentagon to Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait, and met with governors in Utah, California, Tennessee and Kentucky to discuss foreign, environmental and economic policy.

Sandoval will be introduced to conservative voters outside Nevada next week when he'll help open a GOP presidential debate and political summit in Las Vegas.

"I want to lead by example and show the people of the party that it's important to me as well as to the state to elect Republican candidates," Sandoval told The Associated Press.

But when it comes to Hispanics, Marco Rauda, a Hispanic Democratic organizer in Las Vegas, said many Latinos in Nevada don't know what to make of Sandoval. He hasn't appointed Hispanics to his administration in notable numbers and his interactions with the community have largely been limited to formal galas and luncheons with Hispanic businessmen.

Rubio, 40, became the youngest Floridian to serve as State House Speaker in 1996. He speaks rapidly and without notes, easily bringing tears to his audiences' eyes with recollections of his immigrant parents' struggles and his appreciation for the country that took them in.

"My dad was 30-something when he came to this country and had to start his life brand new. So my generation in many ways inherited a lot of dreams and hopes," he has said.

Rubio says he is not interested in the vice presidential nomination, though his name topped Michigan's straw poll last month for the post. Fueling further speculation about his ambitions are the numerous Rubio staffers ? including his chief of staff and communications director ? who worked for Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential campaign

Despite his roots, he has largely dodged taking a public stand on tough immigration issues, refusing recently to be interviewed about immigration by the nation's largest Spanish-language network, Univision, whose audience tends to strongly support immigration reform,

While Republicans are frank about their hope these three can bring more Hispanics into the GOP fold, the real benefits go way beyond the upcoming presidential elections, Schnur said

Democrats are skeptical that Latino voters will be swayed.

"Latinos do not vote surnames," Democratic strategist Maria Cardona said, noting that neither Martinez nor Sandoval won the majority Hispanic vote in their own states. "They vote according to policies and they know very well that Sandoval, Martinez and Rubio do not represent the best interests of the overall Latino population in terms of giving them the tools to prosper in this tough economy."

Packers top Rams to remain NFL's only unbeaten (AP)

GREEN BAY, Wis. ? Don't expect Charles Woodson and the Green Bay Packers' defense to beat themselves up for letting the winless St. Louis Rams pile up yards.

Woodson worries first about points and wins ? and the Packers were just about perfect on both counts Sunday.

Despite giving up 424 yards of offense, Green Bay's defense shut St. Louis out of the end zone in a 24-3 victory that kept the Packers perfect at 6-0.

"Does anybody want to give up a lot of yards? No. But the goal is to win," Woodson said. "We held them to three points today, kept them out of the end zone, which is a goal of ours. There's places where we can get better, we feel like we'll get better, and we'll enjoy this win today."

With Sunday's loss by NFC North rival Detroit, the Packers are the last unbeaten team left in the NFL this season.

But the Packers' defense hasn't been flawless.

Green Bay has been tough in the red zone and made plenty of big plays. But the Packers are having a hard time stopping teams between the 20s. It happened again Sunday.

Sam Bradford was 28 of 44 for 321 yards with an interception for the Rams (0-5). Bradford said moving the ball but failing to score was becoming an unsettling trend for St. Louis.

"It is something that we struggle with all year," Bradford said. "There have been several games that we have been able to move the ball up and down and we get to the red zone, we have silly mistakes that don't allow us to put the ball in the end zone. In this league, if you want to win, you got to score touchdowns."

Bradford's ankle was sore after the game, but he said he wasn't hurt badly.

Rams running back Steven Jackson had 18 carries for 96 yards.

"For whatever reason, we get into the red zone, we keep shooting ourselves in the foot," Jackson said.

The Packers held the Rams to 3 for 13 on third down and 1 for 4 when they went for it on fourth ? more indications that the Packers' defense tightens up when it needs to.

"You give some things, but you buckle down in the times when you're supposed to and get yourself off the field," Woodson said. "I think we had a couple of fourth downs today where we got off the field. Those are the type of things that we're going to have to do during the season. When games are tougher than they are today, you're going to have to make plays and get off the field in crucial situations. And today we did."

Bradford said the Rams have to find ways to avoid getting backed into third-and-long situations.

"It is not easy to pick first downs up when you get yourself into that situation," Bradford said. "When you do it with penalties, it becomes very frustrating. We got to figure out a way, whether it is my communications skills or whether it is guys just tuning in, we've got to figure out a way on first and second down not put ourselves in such a bad situation."

The Packers' offense took control in the second quarter, as Aaron Rodgers threw touchdowns to James Jones, Jordy Nelson and Donald Driver. But Green Bay's offense hit a lull and didn't score in the second half.

"It's a feeling of minor disappointment, I think, in that locker room," Rodgers said. "We just, in the second half, offensively just struggled. The second quarter was great, we put up a lot of points. I think it's encouraging at the same time. It's tough to win in this league, we're 6-0, and have a lot of room for improvement."

Packers coach Mike McCarthy had a mixed reaction to the victory. He bristled at questions about the offense being shut out in the second half, saying, "the last time I checked, when you win by three touchdowns, that's a pretty significant win."

But McCarthy also said the team isn't anywhere near where it wants to be.

"You have to be running on all cylinders, and we're not there yet," McCarthy said. "So fortunately, we're 6-0. We'll continue to work to get there."

Notes: Wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker and linebacker Ben Leber were inactive for St. Louis. Neither was listed on the team's injury report this week. "We weren't trying to send any messages," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "We just put our the guys out there that we thought would help us win the game." ... It was the Packers' last home game for nearly a month. ... Packers cornerback Sam Shields sustained a head injury after he picked off a Bradford pass in the end zone and was hit hard. McCarthy said Shields was still being evaluated after the game.

The Vandals Occupy Rome, Briefly: How a Demonstration Was Hijacked (Time.com)

The protest had been planned carefully for months and, as the scheduled day began, tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of Italians had made their way to Rome from all over the peninsula. In a day of global demonstrations, it looked to be the biggest march in the world in solidarity with the indignado movement in Spain and the Occupy Wall Street protests in the United States. But in the end, it wasn't the authorities that derailed the protests in Rome, it was a small fraction of the protesters themselves.

In a city landmarked by monuments and churches, the plan was to march from a square near the city's central train station, past the Coliseum to the San Giovanni Basilica, a longstanding rallying point for leftist protest movements. Many hoped the demonstration would turn into a peaceful occupation of the plaza in front of the cathedral, echoing similar strategies from Egypt's Tahrir square and Zuccotti Park in New York City. (See photos from the Occupy Wall Street protests across the world.)

Instead the protest quickly fell apart. The march hadn't traveled far when groups of young men began pulling up sampietrini ? the black cobblestones so characteristic of the Italian capital ? and hurling them at shop windows. Others broke into parked cars and set them alight with Molotov cocktails, pulled down signposts to smash ATMs, and crashed through the glass doors of a supermarket. Soon, large parts of the demonstration had given way to skirmishes as men with masks over their face engaged the police with rocks and bottles.

By late afternoon, the protest route had devolved into a full-scale battle, with police vans engaging in charges against hundreds of rock-throwing protesters. Teargas floated like mist through the streets. Demonstrators barricaded the roads with metal barriers and dumpsters, and at least two members of the Italian paramilitary police escaped an armored van seconds before protesters set it on fire. A warehouse belonging to the ministry of defense was set ablaze and a statue of the Virgin Mary was pulled from a church and shattered on the street. Seventy people were injured, three seriously. While the vast majority of those who turned up that day remained peaceful ? indeed hostile to those battling the police ? only the most violent reached the march's planned destination. Indeed, they seem to have dashed there to preempt the rest of the march, engaging the police in about two hours of fighting in front of the basilica. The rest, blocked by the fighting, quickly dissipated, their banners crestfallen; many detoured to the enormous field that marks the remains of the ancient Circus Maximus.

The violence of the protests were reminiscent of similar, smaller skirmishes nearly a year earlier, when violence broke out after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi survived a confidence vote in December. The rioters, mostly young men of university age who have come to be known as the "black block" tore up cobblestones and battled for police until nightfall. This time, according to the police, they turned up in far larger numbers, perhaps as many as 500, from cities all across the country. So far, however, only 12 arrests were made. (See how protesters in London continued the OWS movement.)

As the rioting quieted, Berlusconi, whose government had faced and barely survived another vote of confidence the day before the protest, was quick to turn the failed demonstration to political advantage, condemning the "incredible levels of violence" and congratulating the forces of the law. "Only because of their calm and their caution were they able to avoid more serious consequences," he said. Taking to the airways, Rome's mayor Gianni Alemanno added his voice to the condemnation. "In the heat of the moment, it seems that today in Rome we've seen the worst [violence] in all of Europe, very dangerous people," he said, later noting that the city suffered at least one million euros in damage, including the loss of 20 cubic meters of sampietrini. He was careful, however, to distinguish the violent minority from the bulk of the marchers. "I was very impressed by the reaction of the majority of the protesters," he said. "Never before have there been cheers when the police intervened."

Judging by comments on blogs and social media, many of the protest's young sympathizers share the mayor's analysis, condemning the violence as counterproductive. "It'll only get one result: to scare the vast majority of Italians, and nurture in them a desire for a strongman," writes a blogger named Hassan Bogdan Paut?s, denouncing the tactics as having no place in an era of Twitter and Facebook. "We've remained in the era of radio and television," he added. Indeed, the rest of the protest movement around the world looked on the Roman violence with dismay.

Italian frustrations are much like those felt around the world. The economic crisis has pinched hard in a country where growth has been stagnant for more than decade. Many no longer have patience for a government that has no legislative or policy consensus and has spent the past year lurching from crisis to crisis, coming together only long enough to push through a raft of unpopular budget cuts and tax hikes. There's a broad agreement among the populace, as reflected in recent polls, that the country is under assault by a financial industry that is profiting from its economic pain; among the young, there is a great deal of resentment that they're on the hook to pay for benefits that are almost exclusively going to their parents' generation.

Claudia Vago, a blogger who has been following the protests across the world and had hoped the demonstration would have resulted in the creation of a space like that in New York, where protesters could begin to engage in a dialogue, was similarly disappointed. "At this point, it's finished, everybody home," she says. "Tomorrow we have to start and build again."

Clean energy loan program head leaving Obama admin (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The head of the Energy Department's embattled clean energy loan program is leaving in what officials called a planned departure.

Jonathan Silver, who has headed the loan program since November 2009, is leaving to join a nonpartisan think tank.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement that Silver informed him in July he was leaving. A key section of the loan program expired on Friday. The program has come under fire from Republicans after a California solar energy company collapsed despite receiving a $528 million federal loan.

President Barack Obama defended the loan program Thursday, saying officials knew some companies that received government aid were likely to fail.

He said the process of awarding the loan to solar panel maker Solyndra was straightforward and based on merits.

Oil nears $78 amid hopes of Europe financial fix

(AP) ? Oil rose to near $78 a barrel Wednesday in Asia amid hopes that Europe will contain the debt crisis that has engulfed Greece and threatens to destabilize other countries that use the euro.

Benchmark crude for November delivery was up $2.08 to $77.79 a barrel at midafternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.94 to close Tuesday at $75.67 a barrel in New York.

Oil prices have fallen from $100 in late July as the financial crisis swirled around Greece. The country, which is on the brink of bankruptcy, will not receive its next installment of a rescue loan without meeting strict austerity measures imposed by international lenders.

But sentiment recovered on Tuesday following reports that Europe was taking steps to bolster its banking sector, which is thought to be heavily exposed to Greek debt and could face crushing losses if the country defaults. Wall Street ended higher after a day of wild gains and losses. The Dow gained 1.4 percent, while the Standard and Poor's 500 rose 2.2 percent and the Nasdaq composite rose 3 percent.

"The rebound in stocks managed to pull the energy complex off the bottom from what had been a steep late-session sell-off," energy trader and consultant The Schork Group said in a report. "Which way the equities go today will determine much of where oil will go."

In London, Brent crude rose $1.88 to $101.67 per barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange. Brent lost $1.92 to finish at $99.79 per barrel on Tuesday, the first time it ended lower than $100 since February.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 4 cents to $2.76 per gallon and gasoline futures fell 3 cents to $2.51 per gallon. Natural gas rose 2 cents to $3.66 per 1,000 cubic feet.

New Delhi-- Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY) and AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) announced results from an investigational Phase 3b clinical study in which the addition of ONGLYZA? (saxagliptin) 5 mg to ongoing insulin therapy (with or without metformin) maintained reductions of blood sugar levels (glycosylated hemoglobin levels, or HbA1c) in adult patients with type 2 diabetes compared to the addition of placebo (with or without metformin) from 24 to 52 weeks. These results, presented at the 47th European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal, are from an extension of a 24-week trial, the results of which were presented at the 71st American Diabetes Association (ADA) Scientific Sessions in San Diego, CA in June 2011.

In the 52-week analysis, change from baseline in HbA1c in patients taking ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin (with or without metformin) was -0.75% compared to -0.38% for those taking placebo added to insulin (with or without metformin). There was also a greater increase from baseline mean daily insulin dose in patients who received placebo compared to patients who received ONGLYZA 5 mg (with or without metformin). It is unknown whether increased insulin doses by patients in the placebo group could have affected the magnitude of differences seen between the two treatment groups in the efficacy analyses. The proportion of patients in each treatment group who experienced at least one adverse event over the 52-week treatment period was similar. The most common events included hypoglycemia, urinary tract infection, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection, headache and bronchitis.

"Since many patients with type 2 diabetes will eventually require insulin, it is important to assess a compound's ability to be used in combination with insulin to manage blood glucose control over the long term," said Anthony Barnett, MD, University of Birmingham and Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and principal investigator of the study. "This is the first longer- term study to report that ONGLYZA 5 mg, used with insulin, maintains improvement in glucose control over 24 to 52 weeks in adult patients with type 2 diabetes."

In Europe, ONGLYZA is indicated as a once-daily 5 mg oral tablet dose in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control:

?in combination with metformin, when metformin alone, with diet and exercise, does not provide adequate glycemic control;

?in combination with a sulphonylurea, when sulphonylurea alone, with diet and exercise, does not provide adequate glycemic control in patients for whom use of metformin is considered inappropriate; or

?in combination with a thiazolidinedione, when the thiazolidinedione alone, with diet and exercise, does not provide adequate glycemic control in patients for whom use of a thiazolidinedione is considered appropriate.

ONGLYZA is currently not indicated in combination with insulin therapy.

ONGLYZA should not be used for the treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis (increased levels of ketones in the blood or urine), as it would not be effective in these settings.

About the Study

This was a Phase 3b, multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind 24- week study with a 28-week extension. The primary endpoint at 24 weeks was mean change in HbA1c from baseline of ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin (with or without metformin) compared to placebo added to insulin (with or without metformin). The study met the primary endpoint, demonstrating that ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin (with or without metformin) achieved a statistically significant HbA1c reduction from baseline of -0.75% compared to -0.38% (p-value

The study included 455 individuals with type 2 diabetes (ages 18 - 78) with inadequate glycemic control (HbA1c levels ? 7.5% and ? 11%; mean baseline HbA1c = 8.7%) who were receiving a stable dose of insulin (with or without metformin). Patients were randomly assigned to receive ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin (n = 304) or placebo added to insulin (n = 151) once-daily for 52 weeks. During the initial 24-week period, patients were advised to maintain stable insulin doses, which could be decreased to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with hyperglycemia or with substantially increased insulin had a rescue visit and remained in the study on a flexible insulin regimen. During the extension period, all patients were able to adopt a flexible insulin regimen. Sixty-nine percent of patients were treated with metformin, and the dose could not be changed in the study.

Of the 455 patients initially randomized and treated in the study, 371 patients completed the extension (81% of patients in the ONGLYZA added to insulin group and 83% of patients in the placebo added to insulin group, of those originally treated).

Study Results

Over 52 weeks, patients receiving ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin (with or without metformin) compared to patients receiving placebo added to insulin (with or without metformin) showed the following:

-Maintained reductions of blood sugar levels over 52 weeks in HbA1c from baseline:

-0.75% vs. -0.38% (p =

o Similar HbA1c reduction was reported for patients with or without metformin use at baseline.

-Increase in mean total daily dose of insulin from baseline of +5.67 units/day vs. +6.67 units/day.

Of patients on ONGLYZA 5 mg, 21.3% achieved a therapeutic glycemic response of HbA1c

-Increases in mean change in body weight from baseline of 0.8 kg for ONGLYZA 5 mg vs. 0.5 kg for placebo (95% CI: -0.3, 0.9; n = 246, baseline 87.7 kg for ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin; n = 125, baseline 86.2 kg for placebo added to insulin)

Most patients completed the study through week 52 (81% and 83% of patients in the ONGLYZA and placebo groups, respectively).

Over the 52-week treatment period, 66.4% of patients in the ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin group had at least one adverse event compared to 71.5% in the placebo added to insulin group. Hypoglycemia was reported in 22.7% of patients in the ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin group compared to 26.5% in the placebo added to insulin group, with confirmed hypoglycemia of 7.6% and 6.6%, respectively. Confirmed hypoglycemia was defined as hypoglycemic symptoms associated with a fingerstick glucose measurement of ? 50 mg/dL at the time of the event.

The other most common adverse events (incidence ? 5% for ONGLYZA 5 mg) were as follows for ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin (with or without metformin) compared to placebo added to insulin (with or without metformin) respectively:

- Urinary tract infections (7.9% vs. 7.9%)

- Nasopharyngitis (6.3% vs. 6.6%)

- Upper respiratory tract infections (6.3% vs. 7.3%)

- Headache (5.9% vs. 4.0%)

- Bronchitis (5.3% vs.3.3%)

Twenty-five (8.2%) patients in the ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin group reported at least one serious adverse event (SAE), as compared to 13 (8.6%) patients in the placebo added to insulin group. Treatment-related SAEs were reported in three patients in the ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin group vs. zero in the placebo added to insulin group. In the ONGLYZA 5 mg added to insulin group, nine (3.0%) patients discontinued the study due to adverse events, of which four were considered serious adverse events. In the placebo added to insulin group, three (2.0%) patients discontinued due to adverse events, of which zero were considered serious adverse events. There were also two deaths in the ONGLYZA added to insulin group, in which both events were considered unrelated to treatment.

About ONGLYZA? (saxagliptin)

As of September 2011, ONGLYZA has been submitted for regulatory review in more than 90 countries and is approved in 66 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, 30 European countries, India, Brazil and China.

Warnings and Precautions

-Use with Medications Known to Cause Hypoglycemia: Insulin secretagogues, such as sulfonylureas, cause hypoglycemia. Therefore, a lower dose of the insulin secretagogue may be required to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia when used in combination with ONGLYZA.

-Macrovascular Outcomes: There have been no clinical studies establishing conclusive evidence of macrovascular risk reduction with ONGLYZA or any other antidiabetic drug.

Most Common Adverse Reactions

-Most common adverse reactions (regardless of investigator assessment of causality) reported in ? 5% of patients treated with ONGLYZA and more commonly than in patients treated with control were upper respiratory tract infection (7.7%, 7.6%), headache (7.5%, 5.2%), nasopharyngitis (6.9%, 4.0%) and urinary tract infection (6.8%, 6.1%).

-When used as add-on combination therapy with a thiazolidinedione, the incidence of peripheral edema for ONGLYZA 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and placebo was 3.1%, 8.1% and 4.3%, respectively.

Drug Interactions

Because ketoconazole, a strong CYP3A4/5 inhibitor, increased saxagliptin exposure, the dose of ONGLYZA should be limited to 2.5 mg when coadministered with a strong CYP3A4/5 inhibitor (e.g., atazanavir, clarithromycin, indinavir, itraconazole, ketoconazole, nefazodone, nelfinavir, ritonavir, saquinavir and telithromycin).

Use in Specific Populations

-Patients with Renal Impairment: The dose of ONGLYZA (saxagliptin) is 2.5 mg once daily for patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, or with end-stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis (creatinine clearance [CrCl] ? 50 mL/min). ONGLYZA should be administered following hemodialysis. ONGLYZA has not been studied in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Assessment of renal function is recommended prior to initiation of ONGLYZA and periodically thereafter.

-Pregnant and Nursing Women: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. ONGLYZA, like other antidiabetic medications, should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether saxagliptin is secreted in human milk. Because many drugs are secreted in human milk, caution should be exercised when ONGLYZA is administered to a nursing woman.

-Pediatric Patients: Safety and effectiveness of ONGLYZA in pediatric patients have not been established.

About Type 2 Diabetes

In 2010, diabetes was estimated to affect nearly 300 million people aged 20-79 worldwide. Because of the aging population and the growing trend of obesity, the prevalence of diabetes is projected to reach nearly 440 million by 2030. Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90 to 95% of all cases of diagnosed diabetes in adults. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by insulin resistance and/or dysfunction of beta cells in the pancreas, which decreases insulin sensitivity and secretion, leading to elevated glucose levels. Over time, this sustained hyperglycemia contributes to worsening insulin resistance and further beta cell dysfunction. Significant unmet needs exist as nearly half of treated patients remain uncontrolled on their current glucose-lowering regimen.

Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca Collaboration

Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca entered into a collaboration in January 2007 to enable the companies to research, develop and commercialise select investigational drugs for type 2 diabetes. The Bristol-Myers Squibb/AstraZeneca Diabetes collaboration is dedicated to global patient care, improving patient outcomes and creating a new vision for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Alma observatory captures stars being born, reports back on universe's awkward teenage years

A baby book for our cosmos? That'd be a happy by-product of the massive insight star-gazing scientists are set to glean from Alma -- the telescope responsible for ushering in a "new golden age of astronomy." The Atacama large millimeter/submillimeter array (as it's known in long form), located 3,000 meters above sea level on a Chilean plateau, goes beyond the voyeuristic powers of current optical telescopes, delivering detailed imagery of the dense gas clouds that birth baby stars. Why is this significant? Well, using the complex 20-antenna strong array (a total of 66 are planned), astronomers from North America, Europe and Japan will get a first-hand glimpse of the gaseous mix that was our universe a few hundred million years post-Big Bang. Consider the research a time-traveling peek back into the formative years of existence. Heady stuff, yes, but the array won't have its multiple, celestial-focused eyes trained solely on star nurseries; scientists from around the globe already plan on getting an up close look at the Sagittarius A black hole. When these "Pyramids of the 21st Century" finish construction in 2013, we'll be just one step closer to viewing the limits of our cosmic fishbowl.

Sony cuts the VAIO SA's starting price to $1,000, starts shipping the 15-inch VAIO SE

Lots of PC news flowing out of Sony Electronics' US headquarters this fine Sunday morning. First, the company slashed the starting price of the 13-inch VAIO SA laptop from $1,250 to $1,000, while the lower-end SB series now starts at $780 (it had been going for $800 after instant savings). We asked Sony's PR team what that means for folks who recently purchased either of these through Sony's online store, and still haven't gotten a response, but the company was quick to remind us that it's up to retailers such as Best Buy to set their own price protection policies. (Thanks, Sony!)

Moving along, that 15.5-inch VAIO SE series we reviewed a month ago is at last up for sale, beautiful 1080p display and all. You can find her on Sony's site starting at a thousand bucks with a Core i5-2430M processor, 4GB of RAM, a 640GB 5,400RPM hard drive, DVD burner and, of course, that 1920 x 1080 panel. So, is all that worth a flaky trackpad and poor battery life (sans $150 slice)? That, friends, is a decision you'll have to make for yourself. Finally, in more granular news, the 14-inch C and E series are getting expanded Sandy Bridge processor options, while the 16-inch F series and L series all-in-ones will come with Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum, Sound Forge Audio Studio and ACID Music Studio pre-installed. In addition, the SA, L, F and E series are all getting speed bumps, as are pre-configured SB and Z series laptops. Oh, and the SB is now available in red. Got it? Good. Lots of up to date specs at the source link.

Expert Panel to Reveal How to Build a Business Case for Podcasting at Syndicate Conference in New York

New York City, NY (PRWEB) May 14, 2006

Mainstream news media professionals responsible for podcasting initiatives currently underway at BusinessWeek, WashingtonPost.com and National Public Radio are confirmed to appear on an expert panel at the Syndicate Conference in New York to discuss the business reasons why their organizations decided to start podcasting.

Appearing on the panel is Heather Green, internet department editor at BusinessWeek, who in addition to writing and editing stories for the print edition, also co-authors blogspotting.net and hosts The Cutting Edge podcast. She will be joined by Washington Post Newsweek Interactive director of business development Jeff Burkett, who is responsible for the outlet’s daily news video podcast, and Mikel Ellcessor, senior director, programming operations and distribution at WNYC-FM (NPR), one of the first major market public radio stations to reach significant audiences through podcasting.

The panel will be moderated by iPressroom founder and chairman Eric Schwartzman, who also hosts the “On the Record…Online” podcast, which explores how new media is changing the way organizations communicate, and the way people consume media and information. Past guests include Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, Ken Auletta of The New Yorker and David Pogue of The New York Times.

?You don’t have to build a business case for trade advertising or direct mail. They’re accepted practices, so they’re rewarded with budget dollars. But podcasting is new, so it has to be justified said Schwartzman. ?We’re going to find out first-hand from our panel how they managed to build a business case that convinced their executive management to start podcasting.?
