At least 22 die in Egyptian clashes over death sentences

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 22 people died on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, adding to bloody street turmoil confronting Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Armored vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said after the violence. The state news agency quoted a general as saying the military aimed to "establish calm and stability in Port Said and to protect public institutions".

The unrest began with nationwide rallies on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the overthrow of autocrat Hosni Mubarak, a democratic uprising that protesters now accuse Mursi of betraying by ramming through an Islamist-hued constitution.

While anniversary-related violence subsided, a new flare-up hit Port Said after a court sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in the deaths of 74 people after a local soccer match on February 1, 2012, many of them fans of the visiting team.

Residents ran wildly through the streets of Port Said in rage that men from their city had been blamed for the stadium disaster, and gunshots were reported near the prison where most of the defendants were being held.

State television, citing the Health Ministry, said 22 people were killed and more than 200 wounded. Security sources said at least two of the dead were policemen.

A witness said some men stormed a police station in Port Said, where protesters lit tires in the street, sending black smoke funneling into the air.

At least nine people were killed in clashes with police on Friday, mainly in the port of Suez where the army has also deployed. Hundreds were injured as police rained down tear gas on protesters armed with stones and some with petrol bombs.

The schism between Islamists and secular Egyptians is hurting efforts by Mursi, freely elected in June, to revive an economy in crisis and reverse a slide in Egypt's currency.

The political strife and lack of security that has blighted the Arab world's most populous country over much of the post-Mubarak era is casting a chilling shadow over a parliamentary election expected to start in April.

Highlighting tensions, the opposition National Salvation Front coalition called for a government of national unity and an early presidential vote among other demands. It said it would call for more protests next Friday and could boycott the parliamentary election if its demands are not met.

Mursi's opponents say he has failed to deliver on economic pledges or be a president representing the full political and communal diversity of Egyptians, as he pledged.

His supporters say his critics do not respect the democracy that has given Egypt its first freely elected leader.

VICTIMS' RELATIVES CHEER

At the Port Said soccer stadium a year ago, many spectators were crushed and witnesses saw some thrown off balconies after the match between Cairo's Al Ahly and local team al-Masri.

Families of victims in court cheered and wept for joy when Judge Sobhy Abdel Maguid read a list of 21 names "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote execution, as all death sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

A total of 73 people have been standing trial. Other rulings will be issued on March 9, the judge said.

One relative in the court shouted: "God is greatest." Outside the Al Ahly club in Cairo, fans also cheered. They had threatened more violence unless the death penalty was meted out.

Thousands took to the streets of Cairo, Alexandria and other cities on Friday to protest against what they call the authoritarianism of Mursi's rule. Protesters in Cairo were again hurling stones at police lines in Cairo on Saturday.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 anti-Mubarak revolt and near where youths stoned police.

"PURSUING CRIMINALS"

Ahmed Salama, 28, a protester camped out with dozens of others in Tahrir, said: "The protests will continue until we realize all the demands of the revolution - bread, freedom and social justice."

In a statement in response to Friday's violence, Mursi said the state would not hesitate in "pursuing the criminals and delivering them to justice". He urged Egyptians to respect the principles of the revolution by expressing views peacefully.

The president met on Saturday with the National Defence Council, which includes senior ministers and security officials, to discuss the spate of violence.

In a televised statement, the National Salvation Front said it was holding Mursi responsible.

The Front was formed from disparate groups last year when Mursi awarded himself extra powers and fast-tracked an Islamist-flavored constitution to a referendum, opposed by the Front although the document was passed in the popular vote.

"Egypt will not regain its balance except by a political solution that is transparent and credible, by a government of national salvation to restore order and heal the economy and with a constitution for all Egyptians," prominent opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on his Twitter account.

Until the Front was formed, the opposition had struggled to unite and their vote had been split at presidential and parliamentary polls, helping Islamists. The last parliament was dissolved based on court order, demanding a new vote this year.

Mustapha Kamal Al-Sayyid, a professor of political science at Cairo University, said the latest violence reflected the frustration of many liberal-minded Egyptians and others.

"The state of polarization between Islamists and others is most likely to continue and will have a very negative impact on the state's politics, security and economy," he said.

Inspired by the popular uprising in Tunisia, Egypt's revolution spurred further revolts across the Arab world. But the sense of common purpose among Egyptians two years ago has unraveled, triggering bloody street battles last month.

Shrinking proton: Particle is smaller than thought

How many protons can dance on the head of a pin? The answer is nowhere near as straightforward as one may think ? and it might offer new insights into one of the most well-tested theories in physics.?

An international team of scientists recently tried to find out the actual size of a proton, one of the ingredients (along with neutrons and electrons) of the atoms that make up our bodies and the world around us.

Reporting this week in the journal Science, the researchers found that the particle's radius is 0.84087 femtometers. A femtometer is a billionth of a billionth of a meter, or so small that the wavelength of gamma radiation is 100 times longer. The new measurement is about 4 percentsmaller than the currently accepted radius of 0.8768 femtometers, and that small difference presents a puzzle.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Winter's big chill means fewer summer bugs

As the bitter cold in the northeastern United States keeps even hardy New Hampshire skiers off the slopes, there?s at least one potential upside to the cold snap: fewer mosquitoes come summer, according to an entomologist riding out the cold in upstate New York.

    2. Brains vs. immunity: Genes hint at tug of war
    3. Study: Fracking wastewater could be too much
    4. Shrinking proton: Particle is smaller than thought

If the smaller size is correct, then there's something missing in physicists' understanding of quantum electrodynamics, which governs how light and matter interact.

Proton error?
Aldo Antognini, a physicist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and first author of the paper, told LiveScience the difference could mean one of three things.

First, that there is some error in the earlier work, though that isn't likely given how many times various experiments were repeated.

The second possibility is that some piece of the calculations for the proton's size is missing. "Maybe we don't understand fully proton structure," Antognini said.

The third explanation is that the current theories of quantum electrodynamics are wrong, though the chances of that seem slim, given that the theory works very well and it has been tested many times. [Wacky Physics: The Coolest Little Particles in Nature]

This result isn't the first time a discrepancy has shown up. In 2010, Antognini, working with an international team led by Randolf Pohl of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, found the proton radius seemed to be 0.84185 femtometers.

How to measure a proton
To find the size of a proton scientists have used three methods. One is electron scattering: firing negatively charged electrons at positively charged hydrogen nuclei (protons) and measuring how they are deflected. The scattering pattern can then give an idea of how big the region of positive charge is.

The second method is to measure how much energy it takes to get an electron to move to different orbital regions around a nucleus. Electrons usually stay in regions that are a certain distance from the nucleus. Increase their energy and they become excited, and move to a different region, called an orbital. The electrons then fall back into their unexcited states and emit a photon. By looking closely at how much energy it takes to move an electron from one orbit to a higher-energy one, and the wavelength of the photon emitted when the electron drops back to its lower-energy orbital, it's possible to estimate a proton's size.

Last, the method used in the latest set of experiments, involves muonic hydrogen, which is a proton with a muon, rather than an electron, orbiting around it. Like electrons, muons are negatively charged, but they are 207 times heavier. That means they fly closer to the proton, and it takes more energy to move them to higher-energy orbitals. The greater energy differences make measuring them easier. Firing a laser at the muonic hydrogen excites the muon, moving it to a different orbital. The muon then falls back to its lower-energy state, emitting an X-ray photon.

The first two methods, used over decades, had come up with the larger value for the proton's radius. The latter method, which scientists say has a smaller uncertainty, found the smaller one. These calculations, though, are quite complex.

New proton measure
Antognini's team, carrying out experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, not only did the muonic hydrogen experiment a second time, they also took steps to ensure a more accurate measurement. The discrepancy remained. "Maybe there is something in [proton] structure only highlighted by muons," Antognini said. [Weird: Top 10 Unexplained Phenomena]

That's why the new value is proving such a mystery. Quantum electrodynamics (QED) is probably right, and it's also not likely that the earlier experiments were that far wrong due to simple errors, experts say.

"There might be some missing terms in the calculations," said Helen Margolis, a research scientist at the National Physical Laboratory in the U.K., who was not involved in the research. "QED has been tested to incredible levels so far, but the mathematical foundation is not as secure as you might like."

Chad Orzel, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Union College and author of "How to Teach Physics to Your Dog" (Scribner, 2010), said the results are good for physics generally, because of the questions they raise. "It's really boring when all the measurements and theory agree with each other. This kind of disagreement gives us something to talk about that isn't the Higgs boson."

Our DNA is constantly under attack from UV light, toxins and metabolic processes. Proteins and enzymes continually repair the damaged DNA. Unrecognized and therefore unrepaired damage to the genetic material, however, accelerates aging and causes cancer and genetic disorders. A team headed by veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist Hanspeter Ngeli has now discovered that the protein XPD plays a key role in locating damaged DNA.

XPD protein as scanner

Genetic information is stored on approximately three billion base pairs of adenine/thymine or cytosine/guanine in the thread-like DNA double helix. The researchers reveal that the XPD protein works like a scanner that glides along the DNA double helix, scouring the bases for signs of damage. As soon as one of the protein's ferrous sensors encounters damage as it moves along, it is stopped, thereby marking damaged spots in need of repair. Besides patching up DNA, XPD is also involved in cell division and gene expression, thus making it one of the most versatile cell proteins.

Basis for possible courses of therapy

While repairing the DNA protects healthy body tissue from damage to the genetic material, however, it diminishes the impact of many chemotherapeutic substances against cancer. "Damage recognition using XPD opens up new possibilities to stimulate or suppress DNA repair according to the requirements and target tissue," explains Hanspeter Ngeli. The results could thus aid the development of new cancer treatments.

Retro game catalogue Virtual Console coming to Wii U | Games ...

Nintendo plans to introduce a massive catalogue of retro game downloads to the Wii U, starting with a special offer on cheap classic titles.

The spring software update for the Wii U will add Virtual Console software to Nintendo eShop, with a selection of NES and Super NES games, with GBA games added later.

It won't launch with the full catalogue found on Wii's Virtual Console - Nintendo is porting these games over in batches, but adding on GamePad functionality to make them work better with Wii U.

The prices for NES and Super NES Virtual Console games for Wii U will be the same as they were for the Virtual Console on Wii.

But users who own games from the Wii catalogue will have to, perhaps controversially, pay more to access the Wii U version and its added function (although they can transfer the old Wii purchases over and play them, just without the bells and whistles).

If you have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to your Wii U the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of ?0.99 for NES games and ?1.49 for Super NES games.

Guillotine Slingshot Is Probably the Most Dangerous Elasticized Weapon Ever Created

It's hard to imagine what kind of fairy tales a young German boy has to grow up with to inspire a life spent crafting a ridiculous slingshot-based arsenal, but Joerg Sprave seems particularly endeared to Hansel & Gretel. So to celebrate the upcoming film loosely based on that story, Joerg's created what has to be one of the scariest devices to ever come out of his armory: a massive bazooka that's able to behead whatever or whoever's in its sights. Study finds linchpin of skin response to UVA light

Study finds linchpin of skin response to UVA light [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 21-Jan-2013

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] Last year, a team of researchers at Brown University discovered that certain skin cells use a light-sensitive receptor found outside of the eye to sense ultraviolet light and quickly begin pumping out melanin to protect against DNA damage. In a new study, lab members identify a key player in that biomolecular chain of events that could someday become a pharmacological target for improving this protective response.

The new discovery, published the week of Jan. 21 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is that human melaoncyte skin cells rely on an ion channel called TRPA1 to allow a flood of calcium ions into the cells when they are exposed to UVA light. The resulting abundance of calcium ions signals the cell to begin making melanin, the pigment responsible for the tanning response in people.

Several experiments described in the paper show that TRPA1, which is known from a number of other appearances elsewhere in the body, is an essential step in the skin's response to UVA light, said senior author Elena Oancea, assistant professor of medical science in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biotechnology at Brown.

As a matter of basic science, the finding strengthens the evidence of a striking parallel between the skin's response to UVA light and the way the eye detects light.

"Its exciting because it confirms this phototransduction pathway is similar to those found in the eye. It consists of a light-sensitive receptor, molecular signaling cascade, and an ion channel," Oancea said. "The involvement of an ion channel makes this pathway a lot more like other phototransduction pathways."

In other parts of the body, TRPA1 has been shown to help detect pungent but benign chemicals, such as those in intensely flavorful foods. Oancea and lead author Nicholas Bellono said the chemical sensitivity of TRPA1 offers the intriguing possibility that it could become a target for experiments to boost melanin production.

"TRPA1 ion channels are involved in the detection of pungent chemicals such as cinnamaldehyde, wasabi, and mustard oil, and we've now found it's important for this melanin response," Bellono said. "There is a possibility that we can pharmacologically alter pigmentation through regulation of this ion channel."

Oancea and Bellono emphasized, however, that people who go out in the sun should always take widely recommended precautions to protect their skin, such as using high-SPF commercial sunscreens or wearing protective hats and clothing.

Finding the channel

From the prior research in Oancea's lab, Bellono knew he was looking for some kind of molecular pathway that would start with a light sensitive receptor and trigger an elevated level of calcium ions in the melanocytes.

It seemed possible that a TRP ion channel would be involved because TRPs are involved in phototransduction elsewhere in the body that lead to an increase in intracellular calcium. There are, however, many types of TRP channels, and the molecular identity of the UVA-activated channel in melanocytes was not apparent. Oancea confessed that she even suspected another as the culprit. But many experiments later, the team hit on TRPA1 and amassed considerable evidence to confirm its vital role.

In one experiment, for example, they treated melanocytes with "antagonist" chemicals known to block TRPA1 activity. They then exposed the cells to UVA light and measured the resulting electrical response. The cells blocked with the antagonists had 80 to 90 percent reduction in current compared to the unhindered cells.

They used a similar technique of specifically blocking TRPA1 activity to show that the ion channel contributes greatly to the presence of calcium ions after UVA exposure compared to unhindered melanocyte cells. They also found melanocytes produce little or no melanin following exposure to UVA when TRPA1 is blocked.

They did not, however, do experiments to see whether adding TRPA1 stimulating substances could increase melanin production.

In addition to Bellono and Oancea, other authors on the paper are Laura Kammel and Anita Zimmerman.

The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health (grant T32-GM077995), and Brown University funded the research.

Instead of this, you should focus your energy on the things that you want to develop that also go along with your own values. Doing this will help you make changes throughout your life that can benefit you.

Focus on one issue at a time. Even though you may want to develop several of your personal characteristics, your chances of doing this successfully are greatly increased if you concentrate on enhancing them one by one. This means you will be able to maintain the changes as you turn them into habits as habits take time to stick.

TIP! You should be comfortable promoting and working within the boundaries of your strengths. Each person has their own set of skills.

You need to know what it is that you want your life to be if you want to develop as a person. Having long-term goals is great, because you could have a big change in your perspective.

It should be clear now that bettering yourself is not a scary thing. The really important thing is to keep your mind focused on the great benefits to your well-being and satisfaction that a rigorous program of self-improvement will provide.

It's a rom-com that succeeds in revitalizing that discredited genre where so many others have failed, injecting it with the grit and emotion of realist drama rather than with amped-up whimsy or social satire or montages of people walking on the beach.

Silver Linings Playbook tells us that happily-ever-after may depend on finding people who coexist with our lunacy, not ones who can lead us out of it. In any case, it's crazy good.

A crazy beaut of a comedy that brims with generosity and manages to circumvent predictability at every turn.

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

Lawrence, in her most high-low, sad-comic turn yet, is remarkable.

Consistently engaging, funny, and touching. This is the kind of picture in which two hours of running time whiz by in a flash.

Silver Linings Playbook is the best movie of 2012 and the acting is mind-boggling good. Give me the Oscar picks, and it wins in every nominated category.

Succeeds less on the merits of aesthetics than its willingness to give in to crowd-pleasing effervescence.

A quirky, dramatic and totally entertaining movie that features someof the best acting of the year.

Having gone from unknown actress to Oscar nominee to "The Hunger Games" in what seemed like a blink of an eye, Lawrence shows herself a master of timing and plays off Cooper brilliantly.

Silver Linings Playbook doesn't settle for the routine or the clich?. It's a funny drama about imperfect people looking for love. It also happens to be the best romantic comedy in years.

Unique, beguiling, and occasionally frustrating: These descriptions equally apply to Silver Linings Playbook and its two central characters.

Russell keeps the outcome interesting; he knows that every silver lining has a cloud.

A feel-good film filled with laughs and memorable performances, David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook leaves you so ecstatically happy that it might just be the most recommendable movie of 2012.

The plot is clever and a bit unconventional. Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro all turn in wonderful performances in this very funny, very warm comedy.

During its rocky road to becoming a fractured love story, Silver Linings Playbook and its great ensemble cast run a funny, conflict-mined, even suspenseful path. It's a total winner.

Unlike the usual run-of-the-mill rom-com, this film bristles with life from the central core of the love story, to the quirky band of supporting players who add to the fun.

With "The Silver Linings Playbook," Russell picks up the traditional quirky rom-com genre and shakes it around, just to see what happens. Where it's going is fairly predictable; how it gets there isn't.

A delightfully dysfunctional romantic comedy that's moving, funny and features just the right amount of crazy love.

A tenderhearted tale about two terribly wounded souls who survive by grudgingly leaning on each other's shoulder.

Your best bet for a movie that will entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even make you tear-up.

Russell handles the shifts in tone extremely effectively, and has sacrificed little of his sardonic edge in crafting something this superficially accessible.

U.S. Researchers Tie New Type of Infection to Deer Ticks

Researchers have found that humans are at risk of contracting a new disease linked to deer ticks in the United States, according to a new study published on Thursday by the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). The disease, which so far has no official name, is said to resemble other "relapsing fever infections" and Lyme disease.

The disease was reportedly first discovered in Japan. The report in NEJM stated that the disease has now been found throughout the U.S. and in all the same species of ticks that are known to carry Lyme disease.

Here is some of the key information that emerged on Thursday regarding this study.

* The disease appears to develop due to an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia miyamotoi, which is related to the same strain of borrelia that is responsible for various diseases that cause relapsing fevers, according to the NEJM report.

* A spirochete is a wiggly, "spiral-shaped" bacterium, as noted by Biology Online. It is microscopic.

* The first recorded incident of the disease being found in a human was in Russia in 2011. Up until that time it had only been found in certain varieties of ticks.

* Reuters reported on Thursday that this particular bacterium was first noted in Japan in 1995. It was found stateside in 2001.

* Reuters also noted that most U.S. cases of tick-borne illnesses happen in the Northeast, as well as the northern Midwest.

* Antibiotics appear to clear up the infection, but if not given during the first bout of the illness, the person infected often has recurring bouts of fever until the infection is cleared.

* USA Today noted that this particular infection is marked by "flu-like symptoms," including fever and fatigue. People that don't test positive for Lyme disease may still have this type of infection, which is different enough that it requires a separate lab test to detect.

* This new infection is the fifth illness identified in the United States in recent years that has been linked to deer ticks.

* The Los Angeles Times reported that the infection's effect on humans varies greatly depending upon how healthy the person is who contracts it. A relatively healthy person may have the disease without being aware of it, and therefore go undiagnosed.

* In someone whose immune system is weak or compromised, however, the infection can actually cause cognitive issues along with fatigue, fever, and general ill health if left untreated.

* The effects appear to be temporary, however, as long as the person is treated with antibiotics and is able to clear the infection.

Crime reported to law enforcement rises

(AP) ? The number of violent crimes and property crimes reported to police rose in the first half of last year compared with the same period in 2011, with violent crime rising 1.9 percent and property crime up 1.5 percent.

The preliminary data compiled by the FBI shows that violent crime increased 0.7 percent in metropolitan counties and 0.6 percent in non-metropolitan counties. Violent crime increased in each of the nation's four regions ? 3.1 percent in the West, 2.5 percent in the Midwest, 1.1 percent in the South and 1.1 percent in the Northeast.

The overall increase in violent crime should not be surprising or cause for alarm, said Northeastern University criminology professor James Alan Fox. With a steady decline in violent crime over the past two decades, "it is almost inevitable that some bounce back would occur," he said.

The number of murders was down 1.7 percent and the number of rapes decreased 1.4 percent. Robberies increased 2 percent and aggravated assault was up by 2.3 percent.

There were increases in all three categories of property crime ? burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

Burdensome rules crimp yacht industry in Chinese city

Posted on 11 January 2013

The yacht-manufacturing industry in Xiamen, China, has seen $48 million in exports, accounting for almost 33 percent of the total figure in China.

But although the manufacturing sector flourishes, boating has become a ?bottleneck for the whole industry in the city due to its cumbersome procedures,? WhatsOnXiamen.com quoted the Xiamen Yachting Industry Association as reporting.

China lacks integrated policies and regulations for yachting management, so boating has to conform to shipping rules.

The cumbersome procedures have put a chill on boating in the city, making the more than 200 yachts berthed in the Wuyuan Bay Yacht Dock almost docked ?ornaments? year-round, according to the Xiamen Road & Bridge Yachts Development Co.

Xiamen has pushed its yacht industry forward in recent years with the use of the Xiamen Xiangshan International Yacht Club and Wuyuan Bay Yacht Dock. Now it plans to build five or six docks to drive a new wave of growth in its yacht industry.

For $100, ?75 You Can Send Anyone on Facebook a Message, Even Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook is expanding its messaging experiment with one version where users can pay $100,??75?and send a message to anyone on the site. Previously, Facebook made it possible to pay $1 to make sure a message to a friend didn't end up in the Other folder where it's easy to overlook.

The experiment is only available to a few people, but it shows that Facebook is more than willing to do seemingly strange things if it's on to something. While Facebook has always grown by copying a feature and then doing it better, it also went against the grain on more than one occasion, moves that in the end proved great. Features such as the News Feed were universally hated when first introduced.

While the feature may seem ripe for abuse, Facebook thought this through. There are limits to how many times someone can pay to send a message, you can just send 1,000 messages in a row. Even if you could, that would cost you $100,000, ?75,000.

Charging to prioritize messages is not a revenue scheme for Facebook, it's not going to make that much money in the grand scheme of things this way.

But it is a way to ensure that important messages get through, if you're willing to pay $1. ?0.75 to message a friend or $100 to message a complete stranger, you probably have something important to say.

Apart from the limit on how many messages you can pay to send, for example in the earlier experiment it was only one a week, there's probably a limit on how many paid messages a user can get, to prevent famous people from being inundated.

Note that, for most people, you can already send a message to complete strangers, unless they have altered their privacy settings to make it impossible for strangers to contact them.

But that message will end up in the Other folder, not the inbox. Users have to visit the Other folder specifically to see those messages and few do.

Hospital Pet Policy? Yes, You Can Bring Your Dog To The Hospital.

Over the last few years as a hospitalist I have had the honor of meeting some mighty fine service dogs in the hospital.? These amazing animals bring an incredible sense of happiness and independence to their chronically debilitated masters.? It's not only trained service dogs that bring such joy. ? I've seen some amazing family pets, mostly dogs, brought to the bedside of the healing patient as well.

I'm a dog lover.? We call our Italian greyhounds, Marty and Cooper,? our little angels!? If I ever found myself sick enough to be in the hospital, I would hope my little pups would be allowed to visit me during my stressful times.? That begs the question to be asked?? What does your hospital pet policy say?? Can patients bring service dogs or other family pets to the bedside for some comforting animal assisted therapy?

That was a question I found myself asking the other day.? I know I'd seen pets in the hospital during the course of my normal work, but I'd never taken the time to understand what my hospital policy was. What if a patient asked me about our policy for allowing pets in the hospital?? I found myself searching for answers.

Some facilities may balk at the thought of allowing entry of pets into the hospital.? These folks don't understand the comforting power of pet therapy.? In fact, many hospitals offer animal therapy with designated dogs and their trained volunteers.? Should all pets be allowed into a patient's room?? Should only pets with proven immunization records by allowed entry?? Should size be a factor?? How about potty training status.? These are all reasonable questions to ask when introducing a family pet into a patient's period of recovery.

I took this time to review the pet policy at my own institution.? The first introductory paragraph detailed all the added benefits of allowing animals into the patient's healing process, noting that studies have shown improvement in patient cardiovascular parameters, muscle rigidity, social interaction and psychological well being.? My hospital went on to define three specific scenarios of having animals in the hospital.? These were:

  1. Animal Assisted Therapy (ATT), defined as a goal directed intervention involving a skilled handler and a trained animal to provide a therapy used to help the patient heal.
  2. Personal pet visitation, which I think is self explanatory.
  3. Service dogs, which are animals trained to provide assistance to disabled patients.
I presume animal assisted therapy involves organized pet therapy interventions.? These are the animals I have seen over the years.? As for the service dogs, some students have sued their University, and won, when their school refused to allow them to have their family pet in their dorm room.? These students filed a lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by claiming their dog was necessary for their emotional well being.? The court agreed and provided students an opportunity to bring their family pet with them if they had physician documentation supporting this mental health need.

What about pets?? Should hospitals allow visitation rights to any family pet?? What are the restrictions or requirements?? It's an important topic to review. Many patients may find allowing their pets at the bedside to be a great patient satisfaction issue.? With Medicare reducing payments to hospitals that fail to keep their patients happy, I suspect most hospitals will allow families to bring pets to the bedside.

Unfortunately, many doctors may not be happy having pets around their post operative site.?? The way I see it, many patients go home and physicians have no control over what their pets do. Many patients have been around their pets for years and are not at risk of contracting a communicable disease.? In fact, I suspect, patients are more likely to get a surgical site infection from doctors and nurses who don't wash their hands than they are from a family pet. ? Many nurses may not want a pet in the room disrupting their work flow.

As a pet lover and believer in the value of pet therapy, I was happy to see my hospital allows pets at the bedside, with some reasonable restrictions, including:

  • The pet must be accompanied an adult who will take responsibility for the pet.? I said responsible adult.? Remember that.
  • Pets will be limited to dogs, cats and rabbits, to the exclusion of amphibians, birds and non-human primates due to the increased risk of disease transmission.? That means you have to leave your pet monkey at home.?
  • Pets should not be near the beside of neutropenic patients, undergoing solid organ transplant or bone marrow transplant, burn patients or critically ill patients. In my opinion, I think some family should not be allowed near them either.?
  • Pet's must be housebroken.? This rule does not apply to family, only the pets.
  • ?Vaccination records should be current.? If you are an antivaxxer, please keep fido away from our hospital.?
  • Animals must be well groomed and free of skin leasons, ticks and fleas.? Again, I don't believe this rule applies to family members, but I might be wrong.??
  • Disruptive and aggressive pets will be asked to leave.? Disruptive patients and their families, on the other hand will be offered free meal tickets and a carton of cigarettes as arbitration.? You know, to keep them happy. ??
In addition, I learned no physician order is required by me for my patients to be allowed visitation by their pet dogs, cats or rabbits. I think that's appropriate. I don't need to give the OK when rude, smelly, incontinent alcoholic Uncle Joe visits grandma in the hospital after her cholecystectomy.

I don't think my patients' dogs or cats are any more likely to make my patients sick in the hospital than they are at home.? I have no control over their actions once they leave the hospital.? Perhaps ObamaCare has given us a right to remove pets from the homes of our patients as a readmission prevention measure.? I'll have to look into that.? I think our failures in hand washing as doctors and nurses are more dangerous than any cute little puppy or kitty Mrs Smith can bring to the bedside. In fact, the next phase of ObamaCare mandates that all visiting pets achieve greater than 90% on their satisfaction scores as well.

Welcome to the hospital Fido, can I get you a warm towel and some biscuits??
