China's premier vows improved school safety (AP)

BEIJING ? Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has pledged more support for school safety following the crash of a bus earlier this month that killed 19 children.

Wen told a conference in Beijing on Sunday that all types of harm to children must be avoided. He said a special emphasis should be placed on boosting school security, eliminating fire hazards, and improving school bus safety. Wen's comments were posted on the official government website.

Earlier this month, a nine-seat private school van packed with 62 children and two adults crashed head-on with a truck in northwest Gansu province. Their teacher and the driver died along with 19 children, who were between 3 and 5 years old. All 43 surviving children were injured.

Jennifer Ella-Chaz Bono Engagement to Air on Reality Show Premiere

Former Dancing with the Stars contender Chaz Bono isn't fading from the reality TV sunset just yet. He's starring on his own show premiering tomorrow night!

That's right, Cher's son is letting the cameras in on his life again for Oprah Winfrey's OWN series Being Chaz. The big event scheduled to air on the premiere?

His proposal to longtime girlfriend (and now fiancee) Jennifer Elia!

Jennifer Ella, Chaz Bono

According to People, Chaz proposes in a "special" way by not overtly popping the question, but rather prefacing the big moment as a "birthday present."

Jennifer Ella's reaction to the ring is almost speechless: "Wow. It's gorgeous. Thank you so much, it's stunning. It's huge!" Followed by "heavy sh!t man!"

Indeed.

The series, which premieres Sunday, follows the Emmy-nominated Becoming Chaz, the documentary detailing Chaz's transition from woman to man.

The reality show will feature everything from the proposal, to Chaz Bono's preparation for Dancing with the Stars, and more. Are you excited to see it?

Video shows alleged abuse by Mexican police (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexico City's police chief says he has launched an investigation into a journalist's video that allegedly captures a police officer abusing a suspect.

Milenio Television reported Friday that one of its reporters had taken the video recording an officer repeatedly pushing the man's head into a bucket of water while his T-shirt was pulled up over his head and face.

The alleged abuse took place following a gunfight between police and gunmen in the working-class neighborhood of Tepito. The video's authenticity could not be independently confirmed, and neither Milenio nor police released the suspect's identity.

Mexico City Public Safety Director Manuel Mondragon said Friday that he was outraged by the video and that both the police and local prosecutor will look into it.

Billy Corgan starts Chicago wrestling company (AP)

CHICAGO ? The long-standing relationship between rock music and professional wrestling has a new partner: Billy Corgan.

The Smashing Pumpkins frontman has joined with two wrestling promoter brothers to debut the first show of Resistance Pro, an indie wrestling company, on Friday at a downtown Chicago dance club. Corgan describes himself as a childhood wrestling fan who fell away from it, only to rediscover it as an adult hobby before learning about the business.

"Our vision is to try to grow talent," Corgan said in an interview from Europe, where the Smashing Pumpkins are on tour. The Chicago-area native will miss Resistance Pro's opening night, but co-owner and promoter Gabe Baron says a second show will be announced at the Friday event.

"We have people who are going to work for us who are pretty well known on the indie circuit," Corgan said. "You have to start somewhere, and part of that is creating a curiosity in the audience."

Resistance Pro's website boasts pictures of more than two dozen costumed wrestling personalities with names like "The Sheik," "Danny Dominion" and "Sassy Stephie."

Eventually Resistance Pro's goal is to expand nationally, but not using Corgan's celebrity alone. Still, the rocker's picture is the largest, placed among five wrestlers on an advertisement for Friday's show.

"We have to start in Chicago and build a name for ourselves and build enough of a reputation to take it other places," Corgan said. "It's a serious endeavor. I want this to succeed strictly on its ideas. If I had to artificially prime the audience because of my musical life that's sad. This is going to succeed on its own ideas, not because I jumped the shark."

Corgan's partners, brothers Gabe and Jacques Baron, saw inspiration and passion in the rock star.

"This is a guy who is on the same page as we are as far as how wrestling should be," Gabe Baron said, describing a show for fans that's similar to a rock concert. "They're going to feel the excitement of a rock concert but with the thrill and spectacle of wrestling."

Historically, rock music and wrestling have never been far apart, said Scott Beekman, author of "Ringside: A History of Professional Wrestling in America."

"At a certain level I think they appeal to similar audiences," Beekman said. "There is this notion that you're gearing toward adolescent males. There's also this flash of wrestling and rock that's related, the pyrotechnics, the announcements."

The roster of wrestlers Corgan and his partners have amassed makes for an impressive, high-end indie wrestling card, Beekman said.

"Billy Corgan is a more legitimate rock figure than most of the guys who get involved in this stuff," Beekman said. "I don't know though if just having Billy Corgan involved is going to be enough."

Corgan's involvement will mean concussion prevention efforts. He said he won't allow Resistance Pro wrestlers to perform risky moves, like chair shots to the head.

"As a fan, I don't like to see my heroes worn down and broken," Corgan said. "We have to work harder as a wrestling industry to think of the long-term health effects on the performers."

That will be one part of an equation Corgan hopes equals success.

"I believe we can take it into a more casual mainstream," he said. "It doesn't have to be anything more than entertaining."

Int'l court prosecutor in Libya for trial talks (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? The International Criminal Court's prosecutor boarded a flight to Tripoli for talks Tuesday with Libyan authorities about their plans to put on trial Moammar Gadhafi's son and one-time heir apparent Seif al-Islam Gadhafi.

Seif was captured Saturday in southern Libya and is being held by fighters there. A local spokesman for Libya's new leadership says former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi also was captured over the weekend and is being held in the city of Sabha.

Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo said in a statement Tuesday that both men "must face justice."

Seif and al-Senoussi have been charged with crimes against humanity for their alleged roles in the brutal crackdown on dissent that started in February.

Rights groups have called on Libya to hand both men over for trial in The Hague.

Moreno-Ocampo stressed that even if Libyans want to try the two men at home they must still cooperate with the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal.

Libya is obliged by a Security Council resolution to work with the court, but that does not necessarily preclude a trial in Libya. If the National Transitional Council can convince judges in The Hague that the country has a functioning legal system that will give Seif and al-Sanoussi a fair trial on substantially the same charges as Moreno-Ocampo filed, then the ICC could declare Moreno-Ocampo's case inadmissible and turn it over to Libya.

"I will talk to the national authorities and seek information about proposed national proceedings in order to assist us in analyzing the admissibility of the case against Seif Gadhafi and Abdullah al-Senoussi and to understand their plans moving ahead," Moreno-Ocampo said in a statement. "Their arrest is a crucial step in bringing to justice those most responsible for crimes committed in Libya."

Tour operator Thomas Cook in financial trouble (AP)

LONDON ? Fears rose over the survival of venerable British tour operator Thomas Cook after financial problems worsened Tuesday for the company that took more than 22 million people on holiday in the latest year.

Shares in Europe's second-largest tour operator sunk 75 percent of their already depressed value after Thomas Cook said it was seeking new agreements with its main creditors. That announcement came barely a month after the company said it had negotiated new funding arrangements to carry it through the slow winter months.

The company insisted that flights would leave as usual and that it was taking new bookings, but Britons who bought vacations through the firm were worried.

"(I'm) praying it's going to be all right ... but I'm not confident," said Jamila Juma-Ware, 27, who had booked a holiday in Tenerife in the next three weeks for herself and her mother.

Several small British travel firms have gone under since the global economic crisis hit in 2008, but Thomas Cook is an industry giant and a fixture of Britain's main streets.

"There are a lot of small independent travel agents around here, but I said I'd rather just book it through someone like Thomas Cook because they're big and there's more of a guarantee they won't go bust," Juma-Ware said. "And then this week this happens. "

Thomas Cook is, like many airlines and tour operators, suffering from weak consumer demand as Europe's financial crisis has people worried about their jobs.

Unrest in Tunisia ? normally the top winter destination for French travelers ? and Egypt, flooding in Bangkok and disappointing sales in Russia have all added to the pressure on the company.

Analysts said the financial troubles could scare away customers, darkening the firm's prospects even more.

"Legitimate questions will be asked as to whether Thomas Cook can survive long-term," said James Hollins, analyst at Evolution Securities. He added that he believed the company could pull through on the strength of businesses outside Britain, but "a more flexible financial structure and massive turnaround are required."

Thomas Cook Group PLC shares closed down 75 percent in London trading.

Thomas Cook was due to report annual earnings for 2010-11 on Thursday, but it has put that off indefinitely "as a result of deterioration of trading in some areas of the business, and of its cash and liquidity position since its year end."

Sam Weihagen, Thomas Cook's interim chief executive, insisted it was business as usual: "Flights are leaving on schedule, shops are open and we're taking bookings."

Weihagen said people who booked package holidays with the firm would be protected by the Air Travel Organizers' Licensing insurance program, which is funded by contributions from travel companies. However, those who book only flights are advised to buy their own travel insurance.

Thomas Cook has previously announced plans to reduce its fleet of 41 aircraft to 35, and it hopes to raise 200 million pounds ($312 million) by selling assets including its stake in Britain's part-privatized air traffic control service.

Wyn Ellis, analyst at Numis Securities, said Thomas Cook's announcement could frighten new customers and alarm suppliers. The company, he said, "faces a difficult near-term future which could lead to significant loss of market share."

The news upset some prospective travelers near its shop in London's St. James neighborhood.

Tony Wright, 64, said he's had "nothing but good experiences" with the company and would not hesitate to use Thomas Cook again.

"We were devastated to hear the news this morning and we hope its not as bad as it sounds," he said.

Others were disappointed that the company's airfares had not dropped. Simon Ash visited the branch on Tuesday, hoping that the company's financial woes and a lack of tourist interest in Egypt because of unrest could help him find a cheap ticket to Cairo. He came away empty-handed.

"The prices they're giving me are not as good as the ones I'm finding on the Internet," he said.

Nadejda Popova, a tourism industry analyst at Euromonitor, said Thomas Cook's "great brand" identity could help it survive, especially because package holidays remain popular with travelers.

"We talk about the death of the package holiday, but we haven't completely seen (it)," she said. In uncertain times people "want the protection that comes with a package holiday."

The company takes its name from the cabinetmaker Thomas Cook, who had a flash of inspiration while walking to a temperance meeting in 1841 to use the railways to help promote abstinence from alcohol. Cook's first venture was to charter a train that carried about 500 passengers in open coaches on a 12-mile round trip.

"Thus was struck the keynote of my excursions, and the social idea grew up on me," Cook wrote.

He organized more trips for temperance societies and Sunday schools. He took his business a step further in 1845 by arranging a trip to Liverpool.

The International Exhibition in Paris in 1855 inspired Cook to organize a trip to the continent. Ten years later, he was organizing rail tours in North America.

Carbon mitigation strategy uses wood for buildings first, bioenergy second

ScienceDaily (Nov. 22, 2011) ? Proposals to remove the carbon dioxide caused by burning fossil fuel from the atmosphere include letting commercially managed forests grow longer between harvests or not cutting them at all.

An article published in the journal Forests says, however, that Pacific Northwest trees grown and harvested sustainably, such as every 45 years, can both remove existing carbon dioxide from the air and help keep the gas from entering the atmosphere in the first place. That's provided wood is used primarily for such things as building materials instead of cement and steel -- which require more fossil fuels in their manufacture -- and secondarily that wood wastes are used for biofuels to displace the use of fossil fuels.

"When it comes to keeping carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, it makes more sense to use trees to recycle as much carbon as we can and offset the burning of fossil fuel than it does to store carbon in standing forests and continuing burning fossil fuels," said Bruce Lippke, University of Washington professor emeritus of forest resources.

Lippke is one of eight co-authors of the article in Forests. It is the first to comprehensively calculate using woody biomass for bioenergy in addition to using wood for long-lived products. The article focuses on the extra carbon savings that can be squeezed from harvesting trees if wood not suitable for long-term building materials is used for bioenergy. Such wood can come from the branches and other debris left after harvesting, materials thinned from stands or from plantations of fast-growing trees like willow.

For the article, the co-authors looked at selected bioenergy scenarios using wood from the U.S. Pacific Northwest, Southeast and Northeast.

They considered two ways of producing ethanol from woody biomass -- gasification and fermentation -- and used what's called life cycle analysis to tally all the environmental effects of gathering, processing and using the resulting fuels. Ethanol from woody biomass emits less greenhouse gas than an equivalent amount of gasoline, between 70 percent and a little over 100 percent less.

How much of a reduction depends on the process. Achieving slightly more than a 100 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is possible, for example, using a fermentation process that both produces ethanol and generates enough electricity to offset the fossil fuel used in the fermentation process.

In contrast, producing and using corn ethanol to displace gasoline reduces greenhouse gas emissions 22 percent on average, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's fact sheet "Greenhouse Gas Impacts of Expanded Renewable and Alternative Fuels Use."

While biofuels from woody biomass are carbon friendly, Lippke cautions that the U.S. should not use tax breaks or other incentives that inadvertently divert wood to bioenergy that is better used for long-lived building materials and furniture.

"Substituting wood for non-wood building materials can displace far more carbon emissions than using the wood for biofuel," the article says. "This fact creates a hierarchy of wood uses that can provide the greatest carbon mitigation for each source of supply."

Lippke said using wood for products and bioenergy can be considered carbon neutral because the carbon dioxide trees absorb while growing eventually goes back to the atmosphere when, for instance, wood rots after building demolition or cars burn ethanol made from woody debris. With sustainably managed forests, that carbon dioxide is then absorbed by the growing trees awaiting the next harvest.

The co-authors aren't advocating that all forests be harvested, just the ones designated to help counter carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Older forests, for instance, provide ecological values even though they absorb less carbon dioxide as they age.

In the article the authors also urge policymakers and citizens to consider not just carbon mitigation but also to find ways to weigh the importance of energy independence from fossil fuels when considering how to use woody biomass for bioenergy.

"Simply burning woody biomass to generate heat or electricity makes sense for carbon mitigation," he says, "But there's no energy independence gained," Lippke said. So carbon efficiency is only one part of the equation. Transportation fuels depend heavily on imported oil and therefore biofuels that replace them make additional contributions to the domestic economy, including energy independence and rural economic development, the authors said.

Other co-authors are Richard Gustafson and Elaine Oneil with the UW, Richard Venditti with North Carolina State University, Timothy Volk with the State University of New York, Leonard Johnson with the University of Idaho, Maureen Puettmann of WoodLife Environmental Consultants and Phillip Steele with Mississippi State University.

The publication integrates findings across many previous reports generated by a consortium of 17 research institutions that have been involved in life cycle analysis of wood products for more than 15 years through the Consortium for Research on Renewable Industrial Materials, based at the UW. The recent biofuel life cycle research was funded with a grant from the U.S. Forest Service's Forest Products Laboratory.

VTech Kidizoom Camera

The VTech Kidizoom Camera ($39.99 list) is a 1.3-megapixel point and shoot camera designed for small children. Its orange exterior is ruggedized to take the occasional drop from the tabletop to the floor, and while it looks like a toy, it will take decent if unspectacular pictures. It has plenty of fun sound effects, a few games, and enough on board storage to hold 1,000 pictures. While I think more kids will want to use a hand me down phone as a camera these days, the Kidizoom is a good introduction to using a "real" camera.

The Kidizoom looks like its predecessor from a few years ago, also named Kidizoom. It's got a rugged camera body with two large molded handgrips on the sides, and two viewfinder ports so a child can frame her picture with both eyes instead of using one. Both features make it easier for the child who is using a camera for the first time. The exterior is covered with grippy plastic, and it's well made, flexible plastic that's likely to shrug off the occasional drop to a concrete floor. The shutter button is right where you'd expect it, and the fixed focus lens means there's no focus lag to worry about. The new version of the Kidizoom has dedicated zoom in/out buttons on the right handgrip, which necessitates using the LCD viewfinder instead of the optical ones. The camera has a 4x digital zoom, standard for a camera in this price range.

The camera has a 1.3-Megapixel sensor, which is decent for quick snapshots, though a hand-me-down phonecam may have more pixels in its sensor. The pictures came out fine, with similar quality to phonecam snapshots. The Kidizoom's small LCD display was bright, but it could've been a little larger (there's a lot of blank plastic on the back of the camera). My four-year-old son didn't complain too much though, it's sufficient for the task at hand as well as for playing the three built in games. The LCD is also handy for framing the pre-loaded templates and filters that add a little whimsy to the digital pics.

The camera uses two AA batteries, and you'll want to replace them as soon as you open the packaging. Vtech's description on the side of the box state that the included (carbon zinc) batteries are meant for in-store demos rather than full time use. The camera's non-alkaline batteries soon discharge during normal use. For best results, seek out and install lithium powered AA batteries. The camera can also use rechargeable NiMH AA batteries.

Sell-off runs into fourth day on Europe, U.S. debt worries (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? U.S. stocks fell for a fourth session on Monday, as the lack of progress in dealing with heavy debt both in the United States and Europe further sapped investor confidence in equities.

Risky assets like commodities also fell, sparking a sell-off in shares of industrials and energy companies. Volume was lower than average, with investors more inclined to sit on the sidelines amid the uncertainty.

Late on Monday, the co-chairs of a U.S. congressional "super committee" said they have failed to reach a deal on reducing federal government deficits.

"The news was pretty much out yesterday. No one was expecting anything," said Kevin Kruszenski, director of equity trading at KeyBanc Capital Markets in Cleveland.

"Will this continue to have an impact tomorrow? Well, it does add to the overall malaise, but I don't see this being something of unexpected."

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) slid 248.85 points, or 2.11 percent, to end at 11,547.31. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) lost 22.67 points, or 1.86 percent, to finish at 1,192.98. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) dropped 49.36 points, or 1.92 percent, to close at 2,523.14.

There are concerns that the stalemate will make it more difficult to pass extensions of stimulative measures like payroll tax cuts, which could hurt the U.S. economy. In addition, investors are worried that the committee's inability to come to an agreement could result in another downgrade of the U.S. credit rating, though so far the major rating agencies have not commented.

Moody's Investors Service said a recent rise in interest rates on French government debt and weaker economic growth prospects could be negative for France's credit rating.

S&P 500 OFF 5 PCT FOR YEAR

Blue chips, which have been outperforming smaller-cap stocks, fell the most in Monday's slide, with the Dow tumbling more than 300 points to its session low.

The Dow was off 0.3 percent for the year. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are off about 5 percent each for the year to date.

The S&P quickly fell through the 1,200 level seen as the next level of support. After that, support was seen at 1,187, representing the 61.8 percent retracement of the 2011 high to low slide.

Rick Bensignor, chief market strategist at Merlin Securities in New York, said the negative headlines from across the globe made it less likely the market would see a sustained rally despite stocks having what many traders say are attractive valuations.

"Cheap valuations only do so much. They don't make bull markets. They make bidders to curtail down markets, but in and of themselves, the fact that stocks are cheap is not a good enough reason to think that they are going to go higher."

Among blue-chip stocks, Bank of America (BAC.N) fell 5 percent to $5.49.

On the Nasdaq, Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) shares lost 4 percent to $189.25.

HP BUCKS TIDE, RALLIES LATE

After the closing bell, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N) reported quarterly results that beat Wall Street's expectations. The stock rose 2.4 percent to $27.50 in extended trade.

In Europe, the FTSEurofirst 300 (.FTEU3) index fell 3.3 percent to its lowest close in nearly seven weeks. Along with the new concerns about France, Spain's bond yields rose despite a clear-cut victory for austerity-committed conservatives in Sunday's election. There were few details on Prime Minister-elect Mariano Rajoy's plans.

About 7.78 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, below the current daily average of 8 billion shares.

On the New York Stock Exchange, about six stocks fell for every one that rose. On the Nasdaq, decliners beat advancers by 5 to 1.

Merger activity provided a bright spot as Pharmasset Inc (VRUS.O) surged 84.6 percent to $134.14 after Gilead Sciences Inc (GILD.O) agreed to buy the company for $11 billion in cash. Gilead slumped 9.1 percent to $36.26.

Economic data showed U.S. existing-home sales unexpectedly rose in October as low interest rates for mortgages and rising rents encouraged more people to buy homes, a trade group said, but equities were little helped by the data.

Ore. man tells of dumping wife's body, stuns court (AP)

BEND, Ore. ? The judge called it bizarre, and the victim's sister fled the courtroom in disgust. The prosecutor said they were the words of a sociopath.

Just before he was sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife, Steven Blaylock said he dumped her body in the North Santiam River because she had said that if her remains couldn't be blasted into space or buried at sea, she wanted to "feed my friends, the fish."

There were gasps in the courtroom Thursday afternoon as Blaylock's statement to the judge brought the trial to an end.

Blaylock was arrested a year ago after co-workers reported that Lori "Woody" Blaylock failed to show up for a shift at the Bend hospital where she'd been a respiratory therapist for more than 20 years.

Initially, Steven Blaylock told investigators she had walked away after an argument over a World Series bet.

Later, he showed investigators were he had put her body ? in the North Santiam River 70 miles northwest of Bend. Investigators say he carried it down a 100-foot embankment, hid some of her clothes behind a stump and put it into the cold and turbulent river.

Her body has not been found. Kayakers reported glimpsing a body, but it was gone by the time authorities could get to it.

During the trial, Blaylock's lawyers argued that he killed his wife in self-defense during a struggle. The prosecution said the part-time plumber's assistant was after her money. His defense took about a day, and Blaylock did not testify. In six hours, a jury convicted him of murder.

At the sentencing Thursday, he made a lengthy statement about his discussions with his wife about how she wanted to dispose of her remains, recorded by KTVZ-TV:

"She made the comment, instead of being stuck in the ground, if I can't have my ashes spread in space, if I can't go to sea, I would rather feed my friends, the fish."

Lori Blaylock's sister, Cindy Wright, hurried from the courtroom and shouted, "You make me sick."

Judge Michael Adler then imposed a life sentence. Under Oregon law, Blaylock, 47, can apply for parole after 25 years.

The judge called the statement a "bizarre story" and recalled being struck by what little emotion Blaylock displayed.

"I didn't know that you could top what you'd displayed so far in this case, but you did today," Adler said.

District Attorney Patrick Flaherty held a post-trial news conference, The Bulletin reported.

"I'm not a psychologist, but I firmly believe after today that he's a sociopath," the prosecutor said.

After the sentencing, Blaylock called KTVZ to repeat his claim of self-defense. The station reports that his lawyers plan an appeal.

(AP) ? As Joe Nieuwendyk, Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour and Mark Howe took their place in the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday, they reflected on careers that had them standing together on the sport's grandest stage.

"It's what makes it such a special place," Nieuwendyk said.

"It doesn't discriminate. I think the common bond with a lot of these faces that I see on the walls, especially the recent ones that I have some history with, is a real genuine passion and a love for the game and high competitive spirit in all of us."

Nieuwendyk attended Cornell at a time when the NCAA route was far less traveled and went on to an NHL career that included three Stanley Cups with three different teams.

Belfour was considered eccentric ? even for a goaltender ? but managed to compile the third-most victories in NHL history despite never being drafted.

Gilmour was passed over by just about everyone before being selected in the seventh round in 1982 and wound up playing almost 1,500 career NHL games with a heart-and-soul style that belied his modest size.

Howe grew up in the shadow of his legendary father Gordie and began his pro career as a winger in the World Hockey Association before later becoming one of the best defenseman in the NHL.

Standing on the stage in the Hall's main room on Monday morning, they each wore matching blazers featuring the Hockey Hall of Fame crest and surveyed the rings they were presented by chairman Bill Hay.

"I think every kid growing up who loves the game of hockey wants to be a player," Howe said.

"You play in the driveway, you dream of winning Stanley Cups, you dream of winning Conn Smythe trophies, you dream of everything. The only thing you never dream of is making the Hall of Fame so this is beyond any dream that I've ever had."

Only 362 people are in the Hall: 247 players, 100 builders and 15 referees/linesmen.

Belfour joined that exclusive company after a last-minute shopping trip for a suit and tie. He raised some eyebrows when he showed up for a ceremony prior to Saturday's Maple Leafs-Senators game in a leather jacket and partially unbuttoned shirt, but was looking a little more dapper at Monday's induction after buying some new clothes.

"I still have some old suits, but they don't fit," Belfour said.

Nieuwendyk wasn't the least bit surprised to see his former teammate doing things his own way. There were examples of that throughout a career that included two Vezina Trophies and a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999.

"There was a lot of stuff that went with Eddie," said Nieuwendyk, now the general manager of the Stars. "It was the traveling skate sharpener especially for Eddie, it was the trainers going to get a special orange juice in the city that we were in for Eddie. All of these types of things that people can't even imagine existed, but they actually did.

"We lived with it and no one really blinked an eye at it because we knew he was going to be ready and stop the pucks for us."

Howe endured the longest wait among the inductees. He'd been passed over every year since 1998 before finally getting the call to join his father.

Gordie Howe attended the induction ceremony and said it was a bigger moment for him than when he entered back in 1972. On Monday morning, the elder Howe was surrounded by more reporters than his son.

"As you see, we're doing interviews and he has a much bigger crowd than I," Mark said. "The first day in the hotel 50 people came up and asked for autographs. They all asked for Gordie while (brother) Marty and I just sat there.

"That comes with the territory."

As a kid, Gilmour would make a trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame each summer when it was still located on the CNE grounds. Even after becoming a junior scoring star and getting drafted by the St. Louis Blues, he never imagined that he'd one day see a plaque with his likeness on it alongside all of the game's greats.

"I'm 5-10 and maybe a (155 pounds) at the time," Gilmour said. "(Blues coach) Jacques Demers said, 'Can you check?' I said, 'OK.' Because all I wanted to do was stay there. I didn't want to go to the minors.

"To say at that very point where I'd be today? No, I would have never expected that."

All of the dudes in our office (okay, only Rahul) want one of these UP bracelet things. Apparently they use your wrist movements to determine how healthy you are, and then constantly judge you graphing your healthstyle against your friends'. Elvis Arias - Automotive SEO: Automotive ZMOT

Before the dawn of the Internet car dealer advertising strategies revolved around three important phases. At first, customers received sensorial stimulus coming through different advertising platforms including: radio, TV, cable, newspaper or billboards. During the second phase of automotive dealers? traditional marketing model ? also known as the First Moment of Truth, potential buyers called the dealership or walked into the store, where they interacted with the sales staff, performed a test-drive or researched for convenient financing options.

At the Second Moment of Truth, automotive buyers experienced the vehicle, received prompt service for the dealer and demanded additional support from the car store. As a result of this experience, customers would spread the word through positive or negative referrals. However, prior to the development of the Internet, the influence customers could exert was rather limited.

Zero Moment of Truth

After the implementation and expansion of the World Wide Web, the strengthening of telecommunications and the propagation of search engines usage, a new service encounter appeared between the automotive dealer and its potential and present customers: The Zero Moment of Truth.

Although customers receive a high volume of stimulus through traditional media efforts, the pivotal instant within the vehicle buying process occurs subsequently. Shoppers are increasingly in need of finding and analyzing data for themselves. Therefore, they browse the web for automotive news, vehicles reviews, dealerships reviews, safety ratings, car value assessments, service costs and spare parts availability.

This worthy information deeply influences car buyers before even walking into your franchise store. If the dealership?s brand is not visible during the Zero Moment of Truth, it could be completely out of the game.

Thus, dealerships must focus their online marketing efforts towards creating press releases, reviews, blogposts and videos highlighting their capabilities and competitive advantages over other dealers operating in their PMA. This rich content must be adequately optimized so it appears on relevant positions in the top search engines for the most popular local key phrases.
The Automotive Advertising Network provides member dealers with a wide network of powerful sites where they have the ability to publish their content and inventory to gain search authority and visibility during the customers? ZMOT experience. The AAN is the most potent tool automotive dealers can employ to capture clients? attention during that critical instant.

Join the Automotive Advertising Network and get the unique opportunity to fortify your online marketing strategy and amplify your brand message throughout your target market. Mastering the Zero Moment of Truth is the path to success.

Perry says his campaign won't end (AP)

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. ? Republican candidate Rick Perry says a major mistake in a debate won't be the end of his presidential bid.

"Oh, shoot, no," Perry told The Associated Press Thursday morning, a day after he stood on stage unable to remember the third federal department he would cut. He was asked if his campaign, struggling to regain traction, could survive. "This ain't a day for quitting nothing."

Perry says others have made similar mistakes and that the screw up will humanize him. "The president of the United States said there were 57 states one time. Everybody makes mistakes."

In Wednesday's debate, Perry said he had three agencies he would cut, but couldn't remember them. "Commerce, Education and the ? what's the third one there? Let's see," the Texas governor said. Perry's rivals tried to bail him out, suggesting the Environmental Protection Agency.

NEC 52-inch table disguised as boring office furniture

The problem with Microsoft Surface is that it looks too much like fun. NEC has the right idea: affix some trolley wheels, brush some aluminum, give it a sedate name like "X-info Table" and then maybe, just maybe, traditional businesses will start buying into the idea. The specs, however, are easily sufficient to handle a few rounds of office Pinball HD (as in the photo above): a Core i7 CPU running Windows 7 on the 52-inch full HD screen, 6GB of RAM, three USB ports, support for multiple sub-displays, and a scanning function. There's no price yet, but you can probably expect to pay more for the 350-pound frame than for the computer itself.

Sequencing 1,000 fungal genomes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2011) ? A 79-year-old collection of fungal cultures and the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Stationare part of a team that will sequence 1,000 fungal genomes in the next 5 years.

Dan Lindner, a research plant pathologist with the Northern Research Station's Center for Forest Mycology Research (CFMR), is one of 13 scientists participating in the '1000 Fungal Genomes' project, which in collaboration with the Department of Energy's (DOE) Joint Genome Institute will sequence two species from every known fungal family. The project is a first step in creating an encyclopedia of all fungi, which will one day help researchers understand not only what they do, but how fungi operate.

The '1000 Fungal Genomes' project was one of 41 research projects awarded funding through the Department of Energy's 2012 Community Sequencing Program (CSP), the DOE announced November 3.

The CFMR will provide approximately 200 of the 1,000 species that will be sequenced, with the remaining 800 species provided by four other major culture collections from around the world. Established in 1932, the CFMR's culture collection includes 20,000 cultures from 1,600 species of fungi. "It's an incredible resource," Lindner said. "As far as we know, it's the world's largest collection of wood-inhabiting fungi."

The CFMR culture collection is comprised mainly of Basidiomycetes, or club fungi, which includes the types of fungi that form mushrooms. These fungi play many critical roles in forests, from species that protect tree roots to species that decompose wood to destructive forest pathogens that actively kill trees. Researchers at the CFMR will grow the fungi and isolate the DNA for sequencing by the DOE's Joint Genome Institute.

Fungi are prevalent, hard working, and largely unknown despite their importance to everything from carbon cycling to production of life-saving drugs, including "old-fashioned" wonder drugs such as penicillin as well as best sellers such as the cholesterol lowering statins and the immunosuppresant ciclosporins, which made organ transplants possible. Fungi are also needed for the production of quality of life products like chocolate, beer and specialty cheeses, such as brie and gorgonzola. There are an estimated 1 million to 1.5 million species of fungi; only about 100,000 species have a name. "They are so important in so many ways, and we have so much to learn about them," Lindner said. "We know the tip of the iceberg."

The 1000 Fungal Genomes project involves an international team of researchers lead by Oregon State University scientist Joseph Spatafora. Team members include Lindner, scientists with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS), and scientists from universities in the United States, the Netherlands, and France.

Supported by the Office of Biological and Environmental Research in the DOE Office of Science, the DOE Joint Genome Institute's Community Sequencing Program enables scientists from universities and national laboratories around the world to probe the hidden world of microbes and plants for innovative solutions to the nation's major challenges in energy, climate, and environment.

Fall back: Time to reset your biological clock

If you've been falling behind on sleep, this is the weekend to fall back into bed for an extra hour ? and take advantage of the transition from daylight saving time to standard time.

The time change is part of a longstanding tradition, in which most Americans push their clocks ahead an hour in the spring ("spring forward") and turn them back an hour in autumn ("fall back"). The change officially takes place at 2 a.m. daylight saving time on Sunday, Nov. 6 (which instantly becomes 1 a.m. standard time).

A few years ago, lawmakers shifted the schedule slightly, setting the changeover for the first Sunday of November rather than the last Sunday of October. The goal was to extend the energy savings that are thought to result from daylight saving time.

The idea behind daylight saving time ? or summer time, as it's known in other parts of the world ? is to use the extended daylight hours during the warmest part of the year to best advantage. Timekeepers shift some of that extra sun time from the early morning (when timekeepers need their shut-eye) to the evening (when they play softball).

The shift reduces the need for lighting during the evening, and that's why daylight saving time is considered an energy-saver ? that is, as long as there is morning sunlight to spare. Now that dawn is coming later and later, the daylight-saving advantage has largely dissipated

With the clocks turned back, it will be lighter (or at least less dark) in the morning, but darkness will fall earlier in the evening.

Not everybody goes along with the daylight-saving plan. Arizona and Hawaii, for example, stay on standard time all year round. Each state or country comes up with its own schedule for the switch, and that schedule may be subject to change.

Around the world, Canada and the members of the European Union operate similar summer-time shifts. Most European countries made the shift to standard time last weekend, so in that sense America is just now catching up. And yes, some countries in the Southern Hemisphere move their clocks forward an hour at this time of year, in time for the coming summer there.

If you're in a fall-back time zone, you'll want to savor that extra hour of shut-eye: A major study released by the National Center for Health Statistics indicated that sleep deprivation was linked to all sorts of health problems, including smoking and obesity.

Here are more questions and answers about the science of sleep:

When we wake up, why do we have crust in our eyes? - S.S.
?Eye crusts? are the leftover protein and fat from tears that have dried up. Tears have three components:

  • Salty water, which comes from the tear gland behind the upper outer corner of our eye.
  • Protein, secreted by the conjuctiva, which is the clear film that covers the eye.
  • And fat, which comes from ducts in the eyelids.

Tears do lots of jobs. They clean the eye. They fill in tiny imperfections in the surface of the cornea, which needs to be perfectly smooth for maximal vision. They also deliver nutrients to the cornea, which has to be clear to let light through to the iris, and therefore has no blood vessels to deliver a ?food supply.? And of course tears flow at times of emotion, when the tear glands power up and produce more salt water.

  1. So long, DST

Most Americans turn their clocks back one hour during the Nov. 6-7 weekend. This is also a good time to change batteries in smoke detectors.

At night, with our eyes closed and protected, we don?t display emotion, and with our eyes closed we don?t get dirt in our eyes. So we don?t make tears. Small amounts of the mixture already on the surface of the eye seep out, but without a fresh supply of liquid from the tear gland, the fat and protein dry up.

Why does your breath smell so bad when you wake up? - S.B. and A.B.
This one ought to get you to brush before you go to bed. That smell is ... bacteria gas. Gross, but accurate. There are lots of bacteria in our mouth all the time, feeding on the tiny leftover bits of what we?ve eaten. Ever hear of plaque, the stuff all those toothpaste ads promise to get rid of? Plaque is nothing more than organized colonies of bacteria chowing down on food bits on your teeth.

When we?re awake, some plaque is removed when we chew, talk, drink, even when we breathe. But overnight, when those disturbances in the mouth stop, it?s party time for the bacterial colonies on your teeth, and they multiply like crazy. Their waste products are acids, which cause cavities, and gases, which cause that rude blast of morning breath.

Why do we snore? - S.D.
To bug the person sleeping next to us, of course.

Actually, there are several causes of snoring. All of them have something to do with restriction of the upper airway.

  • Kids with swollen tonsils or adenoid glands snore.
  • People sleeping on their back snore because the tissues in the neck are pressing down on the windpipe.
  • Overweight people snore for pretty much the same reason, or because some of their fat is stored in tissues in the neck.
  • People with colds snore because they have swollen sinus tissues in their throat.
  • Drinking alcohol causes snoring by relaxing the muscles in the throat, which restricts the size of the airway.
  • We snore more as we age because of the loss of elasticity in neck tissues, which sag in on the windpipe.
  • People with misshapen jaws, larger-than-normal tongues, or on relaxant medications, all are more prone to snore.

So if you try to sleep next to an overweight elderly drunk with a misshapen jaw and a cold who?s taking muscle relaxants ... bring industrial-strength earplugs.

Why is yawning contagious? - P.H.
If you don?t think YAWNING is contagious, see if you YAWN by the time you?re done reading this explanation of YAWNING.

First, let?s dispel a myth. You don?t yawn to take in extra oxygen. ?That?s been rejected in lab tests,? says YAWN expert Robert Provine, professor of psychology at the University of Maryland?s Baltimore County campus. He had test subjects breathe air with extra oxygen. For others, he reduced the oxygen intake by giving them air high in carbon dioxide. Neither caused more or less YAWNING.

(YAWN. YAWN. YAWN.)

Provine says ?we YAWN when we?re changing states of activity. Going from sleep to wakefulness, like YAWNING in the morning. Or wakefulness to sleep.? (He says we YAWN more in the morning when we wake up, by the way.)

?Concert pianists will YAWN before going out to an important performance. Olympic athletes YAWN before the big event. Embryos begin YAWNING eleven weeks after conception,? Provine notes. He says YAWNING is somehow connected to changing levels of body activity, changes from one state to another, like inactive to active or vice versa, but nobody understands just what the connection is.

?It probably helps stir up the blood and brain chemistry to facilitate those transitions from one level of activity to another.?

Why? ?YAWNING is ancient and autonomic,? Provine says. ?Maybe it?s to get everyone in the tribe to synchronize their states of activity, to increase the success of the tribe if everyone?s working together. We really don?t know.?

(YAWN. YAWN. YAWN.)

YAWNING is highly contagious, he says. Every vertebrate species YAWNS. Fish YAWN. Birds YAWN. Alligators YAWN. But Provine says it?s apparently only contagious in humans.

Provine has made test subjects YAWN by showing them a YAWNING face. Interestingly, if he shows them just the YAWNING mouth, it doesn?t trigger the YAWNING. If he covers the mouth, and shows them just the nose and eyes of the YAWNING face, it does. He?s made subjects YAWN by talking about YAWNING, or asking the test subjects to think about YAWNING, or by having them read about YAWNING.

Yawning yet?
