Health And Fitness | Dancers' Feet ? Best Ways to Prevent Foot Pain ...

The Best Foot Care Tips For Dancers? Feet, Including Ballet Dancers. Find Out How To Relieve Pain, Strengthen Feet To Avoid Problems And More.

Suffering from dancers? feet? Dancing is an incredibly enjoyable exercise that offers many health benefits ? physical, mental and emotional. It helps to keep your body in shape by reducing fat and toning your muscles, and also increases creativity. But, to get all these health benefits without pain or discomfort, you should take care of your feet.

Feet bear the stress of all those dance moves you love so much. This can lead to fatigue, foot pain and disorders such as hammertoe, bunions and other common problems with dancers? feet. Here are just a few foot care tips I recommend to my patients and visitors to MyBadFeet.com who are passionate about dancing.

? Wear Proper Footwear
The type of footwear you use is extremely important to the health of dancers? feet. Of course, footwear for dancers varies depending on the type of dancing. But whether you?re a ballet dancer, a hip-hop dancer or tap dancer, your shoes should fit you properly.

Tight shoes can disfigure your toes, cause foot disorders such as Morton?s neuroma, and exacerbate foot pain. Shoes that are too loose can cause problems such as blisters and force your feet to work too hard. By the way, improperly fitting shoes can also mess up your dance steps. To find the best-fitting footwear, you should have your feet measured while you?re standing, preferably by a podiatrist.

? Eat Well and Stay Fit
Dancers? feet often suffer from poor circulation and a lack of oxygen, making them more prone to foot cramps and pain. To cope, there is no alternative to eating a balanced diet every day. You should also include foods that boost circulation such as nuts, garlic, cayenne, celery, and watermelon.

? Do Foot Exercises
Strengthening exercises provide a few benefits. They strengthen the muscles of your feet to help you withstand the stress and force all that dancing. Plus, when the muscles of your feet are stronger, they?re less likely to go out of shape an adapt to poor-fitting shoes. Foot exercises also increase your feet?s flexibility, making you less prone to injury.

FOOT PROBLEMS CAUSED BY DANCING
When you know about the different types of problems dancers? feet are prone to, you can take precautions to prevent them from happening to you. They include:

? Sesamoiditis ? caused by dancing on hard surfaces, this is a medical condition of the sesamoids, which are very small bones in the tendons connected to the big toe. Inflammation of these tendons curb motion of the joint and you feel pain under the ball of your foot.

? Hallux limitus or hallux rigidus - stiffness of the big toe caused by the stress that dancing places on the big toe joint. ?Limitus? means that motion in your feet will be limited; ?rigidus? means there?s no motion. Inflammatory pain is the most common symptom of this foot disorder.

? Bunions (or hallux abducto valgus) - constant force from dancing is responsible for bunions on dancers? feet. A bunion is a bony extension on the outer edge of the big toe joint, that begins when your big toe starts to lean towards your second toe. Wearing tight-fitting footwear can increase bunion pain.

? Neuromas - impingement of nerve fibers between the toes and metatarsals (five long bones in the foot) causes neuromas dancers feet. This condition causes a burning sensation from the ball of the foot to the toes. Cramping and numbness are also common symptoms of neuromas.

? Plantar fasciitis ? caused by overuse of the feet, this is a disorder of the plantar fascia, which is a band of fibrous tissue running from the heel to the base of the toes. Dancers? feet often suffer from plantar fasciitis, which causes pain and swelling underneath the heel.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
There are numerous home-based and medicinal options to treat dancers? feet. Massaging the feet with oil or ice, and rest are effective treatments for some foot disorders. Anti-inflammatory medications may also help. However, if you have a severe foot problems, you may require surgery. Consult with your podiatrist as soon as possible if foot problems persist.

Example Implementation Plan ? How to Implement Business ...

?

Fulfilling the mission of an organization requires planning and management skills. ?Every business should have a mapped out strategy and a strategic plan is only as effective as the supporting goals that are written to implement it. ?And goals are only as effective as the people who have responsibility for completing them. I am a visual person so I created a picture of the different levels of an organization that help implement goals and strategy.

Image

1. ?Mission, Vision and Values

The first step for any business strategy is writing a mission, vision and values statement. ?This important step clarifies what the organization is about and what it is trying to achieve. ?It also determines the values and guiding principles that are used to make business decisions. ?I believe this is the most important step because it sets the direction and drives performance down to the employee level. ?Without clarity and articulation of vision, organizations are at risk of distraction and steering off course.

2. ?Strategic Plan

Once the mission, vision and values are written, a strategic plan can be created. ?The plan identifies the steps needed to achieve the organization?s mission. ?Strategic plans can be written as long term (1-3 years) or short term (3-6 months). ?It used to be that strategic plans were written as far out as ten or even twenty years but because of the rapidly changing market conditions, shorter term plans seem to be more common today.

3. ?Organizational Goals

Business goals are written at the organizational level and involve high level goals that the organization as a whole is trying to accomplish. ?Goals at this level are typically what a CEO or executive level manager is accountable for to the board or other governing body.

4. ?Departmental Goals

Once organizational goals are written, these key objectives should be delegated to the next level of management. ?This is where the chain-of-command disseminates responsibilities throughout the organization. ?As a CEO has accountability for achieving organizational goals, his/her direct reports share the responsibility and employees help a department manager achieve departmental goals.

5. ?Employee Goals

Departmental goals should be used to create employee goals?so there is shared responsibility for getting things done. ?The more people who have accountability for achieving goals, the more streamlined the implementation becomes.

6. ?Job Description

An employees? job description should include their goals and should be updated annually to reflect goal responsibilities. ?This ensures accountability for goal completion as well as job description accuracy. ?Another benefit of updating annually is it ensure employees are spending their time on tasks that help with global strategy.

7. ?Performance Appraisals

A well structured performance management process incorporates annual goals into the employee appraisal. ?Holding employees accountable at performance evaluation time ensures targeted employee performance and goal completion.

Organizations that are successful at creating a vision, mission and values statement and develops a strategic plan that drives goals throughout the organization not only experiences success at implementing the plan but also engages employees because they can see how what they do supports the mission of the organization.

Do you have a plan to implement your strategy?

How to Get Past Many of the Hurdles of Parenting - Home & Family

There are many theories about parenting, and you can find hundreds of books that give you different options. While it can help to study various parenting philosophies, when it comes down to it you have to use your own judgment and see what works best for you. Yet we can come up with a few principles, such as we?ll be covering in this article, that most parents can benefit from.

Permissive parenting is the name given to a certain style of raising kids that definitely has its problems. There are children who have hardly any restrictions or limits, either because their parents don?t believe in these things or have problems enforcing any kind of discipline. If you?ve ever seen noisy, rambunctious kids in a public place whose parents make no attempt to reign them in, you?ve seen an example of this parenting style. A very permissive upbringing, unfortunately, can create all kinds of problems for kids, especially as they get older. In order to fit into society -school, jobs, everyday social situations- people expect certain behavior and kids raised in very permissive homes often have trouble conforming. Even if kids act like they don?t like limits, on some level they need them to mature and to feel secure.

One tendency many parents have to overcome is raising their kids the exact same way they themselves were raised. Most of the time, this is an absolutely terrible mistake, unless of course your parents were perfect, which is probably not the case. As is probably the case with you, you had well-intentioned parents that didn?t always make the best possible decisions. Our objective should be to do a much better job than our parents ever did for the sake of our children. Your goal should be to avoid all areas of discipline and other parental areas where your parents failed and avoid doing the same.

What?s the best way to get your child to stop doing something or to change his or her behavior? Providing choices, instead of direct commands, is a very useful technique in manipulating and controlling your children. This is a way to focus on something positive, rather than on what you want the child to stop doing. Say, for example, that your toddler is about to make a mess out of your newly planted garden.

Parenting is a very difficult job, something that we are born to do, but usually lack the skills to accomplish the right way. Although we have natural tendencies to want to do our best for our kids, we may often become distracted by our emotions, our temper, and the things that we want. Hopefully, the tips we have presented will help you have a more positive relationship with your children.

Non-Profit IRS Standing

This article has been viewed 40 times.

IRS Non Profit Provides Valuable Education

Many start an IRS Non Profit to meet a need. It's not unusual that people who start a non profit have been met themselves by challenges and difficulties. These challenges and issues spur them on to aid others who might be faced similar scenarios. This empathy for others fuels their will to make a difference in the world for some other person. While simply doing charity work is a credible enough reason for beginning a non profit, there are lots of other advantages to charitable foundation work.

IRS Non-profit Provides Cultural Education

Creating an IRS non profit and its work can offer an education for a life-time. Above all, some of the experience that?s gained comes from the people that the non profit helps. When you are intermeshed with folks on a interpersonal level it is virtually inconceivable not to benefit from their experiences. Many charitable needs are found around the world requiring travel and even in depth time living in other nations. This education is hard to learn another way. By living in other countries one may obtain language, experience new cultural experiences, even wisdom that is gained from nations steeped in survival. So, an enormous education can come from the people in the nations the IRS non profit serves, and the life experiences these people have.

IRS Non Profit Provides Organization Experience

The second level of experience after beginning a IRS non profit can come from running the non profit corporation. A non profit is a corporation just as any other corporation. It uses real money, real selling, corporation practices and standards. One beginning a non profit must learn how to market its product and use good corporation ethics to continue to be in business. The biggest difference in a non profit corporation is the product it ?sells.? For most non profits, the ?product? it markets is it?s story of the method is which it helps folks. Once a non profit develops it?s program determining how it will do charitable work, that story is what donors ?buy.? The ones that give funds and time to the non profit do so because they agree with the solution that is being implemented by the non profit. The donor or volunteer wants to be part of creating the story. By donating funds or volunteering time, they immerse themselves in the non profits cause.

IRS non profit institutions share many similar traits with it?s for profit peer. From hiring personnel, to accounting, on to the promoting, each piece of business must be learned. So, the education that comes from starting a non profit may also be the awareness of means to run a business.

IRS Non Profit Teaches Compassion

The 3rd, ?education? that can last a whole life from being engaged in a IRS non profit is the most vital. This learned understanding is the capacity to care about folks. Caring for others isn?t taught in colleges or many universities. However, it is the most crucial talent an individual can learn. If a person?s life is inspired only by cash and egotistical gain it is probable that person?s life will be empty of significance. When one learns to look after others and to treat them as if they were treating themselves, that persons life takes on new meaning. That kind of education is the most valuable.

You can see from the examples above that beginning an IRS non profit and running it?s an education for an entire life. It?s an education that cannot be obtained or bought any other way than just doing non profit work. It is easy to learn more about this fascinating work by reading more articles at the links below.

Single parents and gay couples face rental housing discrimination

Friday, August 26, 2011

A new University of British Columbia study finds single parents and male gay couples face significant discrimination in the Metro Vancouver rental housing market, compared to straight couples.

Overall, the study finds that same-sex male couples are nearly 25 per cent more likely to be rejected by landlords seeking renters, while single parents are approximately 15 per cent more likely to be rejected.

The research, published in the August issue of the journal Social Problems, is the largest investigation of housing discrimination towards single parents, and the first to the explore geographic variation in their discrimination.

"Vancouver has a reputation for tolerance of diversity in North America and a vibrant gay community," says lead author Nathanael Lauster, a professor in UBC's Dept. of Sociology. "This means that housing discrimination levels may even be higher in other cities."

For the study, researchers analyzed nearly 1,700 online rental inquiries in Metro Vancouver, one of Canada's largest urban centres, which has a diverse, multicultural population and strong housing laws to protect against discrimination.

The study found that discrimination rates varied significantly by neighborhood. For example, communities with greater numbers of single-parent families -- including East Vancouver, Burnaby and New Westminster -- exhibited increased levels of discrimination towards single parents.

The opposite was true, however, in neighborhoods with large gay populations -- such as Vancouver's West End and West Side -- which exhibited significantly lower levels of discrimination towards male same-sex couples.

"This suggests that the bases for discrimination against same-sex couples and single parents may differ," says Lauster. "For gay couples, the discrimination is likely based in ignorance or moral objections that lessen with contact. For single parents, the discrimination may be based more on their real economic marginalization," he says.

Metro Vancouver's liberal population and strong anti-discrimination laws make it an important "hard test case" for rental discrimination in major North American urban centres, says Lauster, who co-authored the study with graduate student Adam Easterbrook.

Lauster says more work is needed to ensure landlords and renters are aware that discrimination by sexual preference or family relationship is illegal in Canada. With many U.S. states considering new applications of anti-discrimination legislation, the findings reiterate the importance of such protections in the housing market, he adds.

The study was based on responses to e-mail inquiries about one- and two-bedroom apartments sent out to landlords advertising vacancies through popular online housing websites like Craigslist. Inquiries were identical except for minor variations by five family types: heterosexual couples, same-sex male couples, same-sex female couples, single mother with child and single father with child.

For example, e-mail inquiries were identical except for opposite- or same-sex partner mentions and signatures such as "Matt and Kate," "Matt and Kevin" or "Melissa and Kate." Single-parent scenarios referred to a son or daughter instead of partners and the gender of the parent.

The study found no significant differences in landlord responses to female same-sex couples relative to heterosexual couples. No landlord or property manager received more than one e-mail inquiry during the study.

According to 2006 census data, there were 71,250 single-mother families and 16,870 single-father families living in the Vancouver metropolitan area, representing more than 15 per cent of families. Recent census figures also suggest Vancouver has more than 4,700 same-sex couples, approximately 10 per cent of same-sex couples in Canada.

Wealth Building: The Amount ... - Finance Articles, Tutorials and News

Wealth building requires some serious amount of effort. a lot of people nowadays want to do this but they don?t quite understand what it takes to effectively create wealth. In fact, a large part of the world?s population today is taking their finances for granted. They only think of today or the present and fail to make effective plans for tomorrow or the future. The following are some of the main reasons why a lot of people have encountered problems with their finances within these past few years: they have an income that?s above average but they still live from one paycheck to another instead of learning to pay themselves first and start working on building up their fortune; they think that they are doing the right thing by saving some of their money and allotting it for a mutual fund because they think that this is the wise thing to do for their money (mutual funds will actually cause you to lose money in the end); and they had a house that was worth more than a million dollars so they thought that it was going to be a good asset until the market went tumbling down and they could no longer get the money from it, which they need to fund their expensive lifestyles.

How to Choose Between PC Gaming and Console Gaming

Article by Anthony W

Three different game platforms are available: console (games that attach to your TV, like Playstation and Nintendo), handheld and personal computer (PC). Handheld is best for kids who like to pull out a game any time of the day. But the consoles and PCs provide the kicker graphics. Steps:1. Think about the price of the system. A good PC may run as much as ,000, and the best may be closer to ,000. A console system is only about 0 to 0.2. Consider power. Today?s PCs can offer a 300-MHz, 64-bit processor; a 32-bit wave table with FM synthesis (for sound); 16.8-million-color, 800-by-600 or greater resolution display; 16 megabytes (MB) of RAM; 500MB of storage and a quad-speed or faster CD-ROM. Consoles offer a 6-MHz, 32-bit processor; 16-bit FM synthesis (sound); 32,000-color, 500-by-300 resolution display; and 1MB of RAM. The more limited console capabilities force detailed games to skip frames in the animation and lower the speed. Consoles miss a lot of the detail and depth found on PCs.3. Ponder compatibility. Every PC has different specifications and a huge range of other variables attached to it (operating system version, other software installed that may conflict with games and so on). PC owners may find themselves calling the tech line to find out how to configure the computer properly for each game ? a problem console owners don?t have.4. Consider the price of the games. The cost of games for PCs is often less than the cost of games for consoles.5.

Determine who?s going to be playing the games. If your kids are the gamers, do you want them messing with your computer all the time, perhaps trashing your files in the process? Do you want play games with multiple participants? This can be easier on a console.

Console Gaming question by Granger Sparrow: How about purchasing a new gaming console just for Green Day Rock Band Game?
This green day rock band thing is driving me crazy! I?ve never wanted anything so bad cos it seems incredible , I saw it?s latest trailer.
The Game Costs around $ 60 that is totally affordable.
But I don?t have a gaming console neither do I have the rock band instruments.
So It would cost around US$ 700 including all the rockband instruments, an XBOX 360 plus the green day rock band game.
Worth it?

Console Gaming best answer:

Answer by JRob
I just bought an xbox for $ 250, rockband with all the stuff is like $ 150, or you can go on craigslist and get it for like $ 100, then the game is $ 60 so thats like $ 400-$ 450, I mean if you are just getting it to play green day rockband I would say it?s not worth it but if you are planning to play more games then yeah it is.

Protecting cells

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Scientists at Northwestern University report a surprising discovery that offers a possible new route for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In a study of the transparent roundworm C. elegans, they found that a genetic switch in master neurons inhibits the proper functioning of protective cell stress responses, leading to the accumulation of misfolded and damaged proteins.

Neurodegenerative diseases, ranging from Huntington's and Parkinson's to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Alzheimer's, are believed to stem from early events that lead to an accumulation of damaged proteins in cells. Yet all animals, including humans, have an ancient and very powerful mechanism for detecting and responding to such damage, known as the heat shock response.

"Why are these diseases so widespread if our cells have ways to detect and prevent damaged proteins from accumulating?" said Richard I. Morimoto, who led the research together with postdoctoral colleague Veena Prahlad. "Can our body fix the problem? That is the conundrum."

"In our study, much to our surprise, we discovered that the nervous system sends negative signals to other tissues in the animal that inhibit the ability of cells to activate a protective heat shock response," Morimoto said. "The machinery to repair the damaged proteins is intact, but the nervous system is sending a signal that prevents it from doing its job."

When the signal from the nervous system was reduced, the cells' heat shock response returned, leading to elevated levels of special protective proteins, called molecular chaperones, that kept the damaged proteins in check.

Morimoto is the Bill and Gayle Cook Professor of Biology in the department of molecular biosciences and the Rice Institute for Biomedical Research in Northwestern's Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The findings are published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

"Currently, we have no solution for these devastating diseases," Morimoto said. "This master neuronal switch could offer a new target for therapy. If we can restore the natural ability of cells to prevent protein damage, our cells should be healthier longer and the quality of life will be better."

The findings are also applicable to other diseases that involve protein misfolding, such as cancer and metabolic diseases, Morimoto said.

Morimoto and Prahlad studied C. elegans, specifically models with different forms of protein misfolding diseases. The transparent roundworm is a valued research tool as its biochemical environment is similar to that of human beings and its genome, or complete genetic sequence, is known.

They interfered with the nervous system signal, the "master switch," to see what would happen to the animals. When the signal was working, the animals accumulated damaged proteins in their cells that interfered with cellular function. But when the researchers reduced the neuronal signal a little bit, the normal cellular response to protein damage returned and the animals were healthy.

While the downregulation of the neuronal signal in the study was done genetically, in humans the idea would be to alter the signal chemically, Morimoto said.

"This work gives us an appreciation that animals are not just a bundle of cells, each on its own to sense and respond to damage," he said. "The cells are organized into tissues, tied into a network that is organized by the brain. The brain can tell the cells to turn on a stress response or not. The nervous system is talking to all the parts to orchestrate an organismal response to stress. That's what's so fascinating."

Researchers detail how a distant black hole devoured a star

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

Two studies appearing in the Aug. 25 issue of the journal Nature provide new insights into a cosmic accident that has been streaming X-rays toward Earth since late March. NASA's Swift satellite first alerted astronomers to intense and unusual high-energy flares from the new source in the constellation Draco.

"Incredibly, this source is still producing X-rays and may remain bright enough for Swift to observe into next year," said David Burrows, professor of astronomy at Penn State University and lead scientist for the mission's X-Ray Telescope instrument. "It behaves unlike anything we've seen before."

Astronomers soon realized the source, known as Swift J1644+57, was the result of a truly extraordinary event -- the awakening of a distant galaxy's dormant black hole as it shredded and consumed a star. The galaxy is so far away, it took the light from the event approximately 3.9 billion years to reach Earth.

Burrows' study included NASA scientists. It highlights the X- and gamma-ray observations from Swift and other detectors, including the Japan-led Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) instrument aboard the International Space Station.

The second study was led by Ashley Zauderer, a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. It examines the unprecedented outburst through observations from numerous ground-based radio observatories, including the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) near Socorro, N.M.

Most galaxies, including our own, possess a central supersized black hole weighing millions of times the sun's mass. According to the new studies, the black hole in the galaxy hosting Swift J1644+57 may be twice the mass of the four-million-solar-mass black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. As a star falls toward a black hole, it is ripped apart by intense tides. The gas is corralled into a disk that swirls around the black hole and becomes rapidly heated to temperatures of millions of degrees.

The innermost gas in the disk spirals toward the black hole, where rapid motion and magnetism create dual, oppositely directed "funnels" through which some particles may escape. Jets driving matter at velocities greater than 90 percent the speed of light form along the black hole's spin axis. In the case of Swift J1644+57, one of these jets happened to point straight at Earth.

"The radio emission occurs when the outgoing jet slams into the interstellar environment," Zauderer explained. "By contrast, the X-rays arise much closer to the black hole, likely near the base of the jet."

Theoretical studies of tidally disrupted stars suggested they would appear as flares at optical and ultraviolet energies. The brightness and energy of a black hole's jet is greatly enhanced when viewed head-on. The phenomenon, called relativistic beaming, explains why Swift J1644+57 was seen at X-ray energies and appeared so strikingly luminous.

When first detected March 28, the flares were initially assumed to signal a gamma-ray burst, one of the nearly daily short blasts of high-energy radiation often associated with the death of a massive star and the birth of a black hole in the distant universe. But as the emission continued to brighten and flare, astronomers realized that the most plausible explanation was the tidal disruption of a sun-like star seen as beamed emission.

By March 30, EVLA observations by Zauderer's team showed a brightening radio source centered on a faint galaxy near Swift's position for the X-ray flares. These data provided the first conclusive evidence that the galaxy, the radio source and the Swift event were linked.

"Our observations show that the radio-emitting region is still expanding at more than half the speed of light," said Edo Berger, an associate professor of astrophysics at Harvard and a coauthor of the radio paper. "By tracking this expansion backward in time, we can confirm that the outflow formed at the same time as the Swift X-ray source."

Swift, launched in November 2004, is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. It is operated in collaboration with Penn State, the Los Alamos National Laboratory in N.M. and Orbital Sciences Corp., in Dulles, Va., with international collaborators in the U.K., Italy, Germany and Japan. MAXI is operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency as an external experiment attached to the Kibo module of the space station. Johnathan Gold Says Leave a 20% Tip, Every Time | An Exploration ...

In a recent article in LA Weekly, James Beard Journalism Award winning restaurant critic Johnathan Gold opined that all diners should tip 20% all the time. This includes good service, bad service, delivery, bartenders, wine service, counter service, to-go orders and coffee.

I?ve covered tips many times on this site (see below for links), but this is the first time I have seen someone so close to the industry make such a broad recommendation. I agree with tipping 20% for good service, but when my experience with the server is lousy, I?m hard-pressed to part with that much money. In my mind, tipping is a way to encourage good service, not all service. If we are going to follow these rules, a surcharge might as well be added to every bill, and save us the math.

The comments on his article are pretty entertaining.

Slava Rubin: The CrowdFunders: IndieGoGo's Most Extraordinary Crowdfunding Campaigns

From the U.S. to Greece, the global economy is making it harder then ever to raise funds. But now, thanks to the convening power of the Internet, there's a new path to capital.

The concept is called crowdfunding, and it's changing the way people fund their ideas at a time when traditional forms of financing, such as bank loans and government grants, are scarce. My company, IndieGoGo, is the world's largest crowdfunding platform. It allows people to create capital-raising campaigns for just about any goal -- whether it's to open a coffee shop, manufacture a new tech accessory, produce a documentary or pay for a costly medical procedure.

Crowdfunding was born in the late 1800's when the Statue of Liberty, a gift to America from the French, almost didn't make it across the Atlantic because the government couldn't come up with the $300,000 to build a pedestal for the statue. Thankfully, Joseph Pulitzer, the publisher of the New York World, turned to crowdfunding, calling on the public for small donations in the pages of his newspaper. The five-month campaign generated $100,000 from thousands of micro-donations -- many of which were in increments of less than a dollar.

So who's using crowdfunding these days? Since IndieGoGo launched in 2008, more than 40,000 campaigns from over 200 different countries have been started on the site, resulting in millions of dollars distributed across the globe.

In the coming months, we'll introduce you to the extraordinary entrepreneurs behind some of the most ground-breaking IndieGoGo campaigns in a series called The CrowdFunders. Forthcoming posts will feature successful campaigns in small business, technology, music, film and health. CrowdFunders will reveal on camera why they decided to use this new form of capital-raising, how they did it and what they've accomplished with the money raised.

The Crowdfunders chronicles a new generation of tech-savvy go-getters utilizing a revolutionary form of financing to overcome today's economic malaise. Below are just eight of their stories, a taste of what's to come:

In 2009, the Greek economy collapsed, tourism rates plummeted, taxes sky-rocketed, and eReaders pinched hard on book sales. As austerity became the new normal in 2010, Atlantis Books found that its methods of importing stock and utilizing retail space were no longer sustainable. In money race, it's advantage Dems (Politico)

Republicans seem positively gleeful these days about their prospects headed into 2012, buoyed by a new Gallup poll showing a handful of Republican presidential hopefuls within striking distance of President Barack Obama as well as some recent predictions that the GOP will hold the House and could take the Senate.

Yet despite all the apparent momentum, the three national party committees tasked with ushering Republicans to victory trail their Democratic counterparts in raising money for 2012, and the disparity is causing some Republicans to fret privately about whether their party committees could dim an otherwise bright outlook.

Even with a slowdown in fundraising during the debt ceiling debate last month, Democratic Party committees have raised $24 million more this year than their Republican counterparts ? a money gap more than twice as large as the Democratic advantages at similar points in either of the previous two election cycles.

?Through July, according to reports filed last weekend with the Federal Election Commission, the three groups that comprise the national GOP?s official infrastructure ? the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee ? had raised a combined $105 million this year.

That compares with the $129 million raised in that same period by their Democratic counterparts ? the Democratic National Committee, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Raising money is no longer as centralized as it used to be, with fundraising now spread among not only the parties and committees of individual candidates, but also the increasingly prominent independent groups that can take unlimited donations candidates the party committees cannot.

But the party committees still play a major role, in part because they are allowed to coordinate directly with their candidates? campaigns, which the independent groups are prohibited from doing.

Most of the Democratic Party committee fundraising superiority ? $22 million worth ? comes from the DNC?s advantage over the RNC, which is largely the result of Obama?s fundraising prowess. With the debt ceiling debate raging in July, the DNC?s fundraising lagged at least partly because it cancelled ten events that were to have featured the president.

The official Republican Party explanation for the disparity is that the Democrats? control of the White House gives them a huge campaign cash advantage ? that plus the fact that Obama?s fundraising activities significantly outpaced those of the previous five presidents during their first terms.
