Dubai-based district cooling firm Empower has said that it anticipates saving 350MW of energy by the end of 2013.

According to the company, district cooling systems can help save up to 50% of total power consumption compared with conventional cooling which has allowed them to record a power saving of 320MW through 2012.

Empower CEO, Ahmad Bin Shafar, said: ?District cooling systems have many benefits, and they are very efficient in power consumption, which is absolutely crucial in this region.?

The firm has said that it now has 400,000RT (refrigeration tonnes) of cooling capacity and had connected a total of 320 buildings by the end of 2012. Customers of the firm ? corporate and individual ? rose to 21,000 through last year.

?With Dubai?s population rising each year and billions of dirhams worth of new projects in the pipeline across the emirate, Empower can help accommodate the future district cooling demand of a wide variety of consumers while contributing to the same economic growth of Dubai,? Bin Shafar added.

In the Middle East region, air conditioning accounts for around 70% of total power consumption. Dubai?s own energy consumption has been rising rapidly ? recording a 7.1% average increase through the first quarter of 2013 on the same period last year. Demand on the grid through January of this year rose to 2,142GW, from 2,009GW last year.

LightUp electronic blocks and AR app teaches kids circuitry basics (hands-on)

LightUp electronics building blocks and augmentedreality app teaches kids circuitry basics handson

There are plenty of kits out there designed to help kids learn the ins and outs of electronics, but LightUp hopes to stand out from the crowd with not just easy-to-use building blocks but an accompanying augmented reality app as well. From resistors and LED modules to light sensors, each block represents a real component that can be attached to each other via magnetic connectors, hopefully creating a circuit in the process. LightUp even offers an Arduino-compatible microcontroller block to help kids start coding -- clip the programming wand to the block, hook it up to your computer, and away you go.

What really sets LightUp apart is the aforementioned AR app. Simply snap a picture of your circuit, and the software will let you know what's wrong with it if there's a mistake. If everything's working, it'll display an electrical flow animation atop the picture, showing kids the magic of electricity. We had a go at creating a circuit ourselves, and were delighted at how easy it was. The connectors fit in either direction, and can be attached and reattached with ease. We also saw a brief demo of the prototype application, and sure enough, it showed us when an LED block was placed backwards with an error message -- you can see it in action in the video below.

Genetic predictors of postpartum depression uncovered by Hopkins researchers

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

The epigenetic modifications, which alter the way genes function without changing the underlying DNA sequence, can apparently be detected in the blood of pregnant women during any trimester, potentially providing a simple way to foretell depression in the weeks after giving birth, and an opportunity to intervene before symptoms become debilitating.

The findings of the small study involving 52 pregnant women are described online in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

"Postpartum depression can be harmful to both mother and child," says study leader Zachary Kaminsky, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "But we don't have a reliable way to screen for the condition before it causes harm, and a test like this could be that way."

It is not clear what causes postpartum depression, a condition marked by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, exhaustion and anxiety that begins within four weeks of childbirth and can last weeks, several months or up to a year. An estimated 10 to 18 percent of all new mothers develop the condition, and the rate rises to 30 to 35 percent among women with previously diagnosed mood disorders. Scientists long believed the symptoms were related to the large drop-off in the mother's estrogen levels following childbirth, but studies have shown that both depressed and nondepressed women have similar estrogen levels.

By studying mice, the Johns Hopkins researchers suspected that estrogen induced epigenetic changes in cells in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that governs mood. Kaminsky and his team then created a complicated statistical model to find the candidate genes most likely undergoing those epigenetic changes, which could be potential predictors for postpartum depression. That process resulted in the identification of two genes, known as TTC9B and HP1BP3, about which little is known save for their involvement in hippocampal activity.

Kaminsky says the genes in question may have something to do with the creation of new cells in the hippocampus and the ability of the brain to reorganize and adapt in the face of new environments ? two elements important in mood. In some ways, he says, estrogen can behave like an antidepressant, so that when inhibited, it adversely affects mood.

The researchers later confirmed their findings in humans by looking for epigenetic changes to thousands of genes in blood samples from 52 pregnant women with mood disorders. Jennifer L. Payne, M.D., director of the Johns Hopkins Women's Mood Disorders Center, collected the blood samples. The women were followed both during and after pregnancy to see who developed postpartum depression.

The researchers noticed that women who developed postpartum depression exhibited stronger epigenetic changes in those genes that are most responsive to estrogen, suggesting that these women are more sensitive to the hormone's effects. Specifically, two genes were most highly correlated with the development of postpartum depression. TTC9B and HP1BP3 predicted with 85 percent certainty which women became ill.

"We were pretty surprised by how well the genes were correlated with postpartum depression," Kaminsky says. "With more research, this could prove to be a powerful tool."

Kaminsky says the next step in research would be to collect blood samples from a larger group of pregnant women and follow them for a longer period of time. He also says it would be useful to examine whether the same epigenetic changes are present in the offspring of women who develop postpartum depression.

Evidence suggests that early identification and treatment of postpartum depression can limit or prevent debilitating effects. Alerting women to the condition's risk factors ? as well as determining whether they have a previous history of the disorder, other mental illness and unusual stress ? is key to preventing long-term problems.

Research also shows, Kaminsky says, that postpartum depression not only affects the health and safety of the mother, but also her child's mental, physical and behavioral health.

Kaminsky says that if his preliminary work pans out, he hopes a blood test for the epigenetic biomarkers could be added to the battery of tests women undergo during pregnancy, and inform decisions about the use of antidepressants during pregnancy. There are concerns, he says, about the effects of these drugs on the fetus and their use must be weighed against the potentially debilitating consequences to both the mother and child of forgoing them.

"If you knew you were likely to develop postpartum depression, your decisions about managing your care could be made more clearly," he says.

Single-cell transfection tool enables added control for biological studies

May 21, 2013 ? Northwestern University researchers have developed a new method for delivering molecules into single, targeted cells through temporary holes in the cell surface. The technique could find applications in drug delivery, cell therapy, and related biological fields.

Bulk electroporation -- a technique used to deliver molecules into cells through reversible nanopores in the cell membrane that are caused by exposing them to electric pulses -- is an increasingly popular method of cell transfection. (Cell transfection is the introduction of molecules, such as nucleic acids or proteins, into a cell to change its properties.)

However, because bulk electroporation applies electric pulses to a bulk cell solution, it results in heterogeneous cell populations and often low cell viability. To solve these problems, Northwestern University researchers have developed a novel tool for single-cell transfection.

The new method, called nanofountain probe electroporation (NFP-E), allows researchers to deliver molecules into targeted cells through temporary nanopores in the cell membrane created by a localized electric field applied to a small portion of the cell. The method enables researchers to control dosage by varying the duration of the electric pulses, which provides unprecedented control of cell transfection.

"This is really exciting," said Horacio Espinosa, James and Nancy Farley Professor of Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship at Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and one of the paper's authors. "The ability to precisely deliver molecules into single cells is needed for biotechnology researchers to advance the state-of-the-art in therapeutics, diagnostics, and drug delivery toward the promise of personalized medicine."

A paper describing the research, "Nanofountain Probe Electroporation (NFP-E) of Single Cells," was published May 7 in the journal Nano Letters.

NFP-E is based on nanofountain probe (NFP) technology developed in Espinosa's lab. The NFP-E chip consists of an array of microfabricated cantilever probes with integrated microfluidic channels. The probe has previously been used for high-speed nanopatterning of proteins and nanoparticles for drug delivery studies.

The new single-cell transfection application couples the probe with an electrode and fluid control system that can be easily connected to a micromanipulator or atomic force microscope for position control. This integrated system allows the entire transfection process and post-transfection cell response to be monitored by an optical microscope.

The NFP-E system is being developed for commercialization by iNfinitesimal LLC, a Northwestern spin-off company founded by Espinosa, and is expected to be available in late 2013.

The technique is proving to be extremely robust and multi-functional. Researchers have used the NFP-E chip to transfect HeLa cells with polysaccharides, proteins, DNA hairpins, and plasmid DNA with single-cell selectivity, high transfection efficiency (up to 95%), qualitative dosage control, and very high viability (up to 92%).

In addition to Espinosa, authors of the research paper include Wonmo Kang, Fazel Yavari, Majid Minary-Jolandan, Juan P. Giraldo-Vela, Asmahan Safi, Rebecca McNaughton, and Victor Parpoil. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

A 9-year-old girl who was "always smiling" is among the first of the Oklahoma tornado victims to be identified.

Third-grader Ja'Nae Hornsby was one of the students who perished when the twister demolished Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Okla. on Monday afternoon.

Members of her grieving family gathered Tuesday at a Baptist church in Oklahoma City to console each other after a night of anxious waiting ended with a hope-shattering call from the medical examiner's office.

Her aunt, Angela Hornsby, said Ja'Nae had spent last weekend at her house, playing with her cousins and ?doing what little girls do.?

?They like to play dress-up,? she recalled. ?My daughter puts jewelry on them and I took pictures of them dancing together and they took video. They were just happy.

"She was always happy, always smiling."

On Monday, Ja'Nae went off to Plaza Towers Elementary School while her father, Joshua, headed into Oklahoma City for work.

As the tornado bore down on the suburb of Moore just before dismissal time, the father of two tried to race back home to get Ja'Nae from school and his two-year-old, Jia, from daycare, Angela Hornsby said.

The highways were jammed, though, and by the time he got to Moore, the grade school had been reduced to a pile of rubble, its parking lot transformed into a triage area for surviving students being pulled from the debris.

There was no sign of Ja'Nae, though. Her father and other relatives shuttled from shelter to shelter, ?looking for answers,? Angela Hornsby said. She dialed all the hospitals that had taken the injured but could not find her niece.

As night fell, Joshua Hornsby went to St. Andrew?s United Methodist Church, where a dwindling number of parents waiting for reunions were camped out.

?He would not leave until he found out what happened to his baby,? his sister said. ?They received a call while they were at the church this morning.

?My sister called to tell me. They were just sobbing.?

Joshua Hornsby also lost his house to the twister. His youngest child, who was picked up from daycare by her grandmother, survived.

Ja'Nae, whose mother died last year of lupus, had doted on her baby sister, family members said.

?She was a good big sister,? her aunt said, her voice cracking with emotion. ?She was just a good girl.?

Pastor James Dorn Jr. of Mount Triumph Baptist Church said he had watched Ja'Nae grow up because her grandfather, Henry Hornsby, used to be the associate pastor there.

Hemant Bhonde, 65, died after a tornado struck Moore, Okla., on May 21.

Like everyone else, he remembered her as full of joy.

?She was a beautiful child to be around, someone you feel privileged to know,? he said. "She did well in school. She was just awesome."

Officials in Moore late Tuesday also identify a second tornado victim as Hemant Bhonde, 65. His family members told NBC News that Bhonde became separated from his wife when the tornado hit their home. His wife survived.

Court refuses to help pro se litigant after EEOC, attorneys reject her ...

Here?s some good news for em?ployers frustrated with former employees who file groundless discrimination lawsuits. Judges are increasingly unwilling to bend over backward to enable lawsuits that look like sure losers by assigning court-appointed attorneys.

If employers win an EEOC dismissal and the former employee can?t find an attorney to take her case on a contingency basis, chances are the court will toss the claim out. And the court certainly won?t assign a free attorney, instead forcing plaintiffs to represent themselves.

Recent case: Christianah, who is black and of Nigerian national origin, was fired from her nursing job. She filed an EEOC complaint alleging that her supervisor, who is from Sierra Leone, was biased against Nigerians and wanted Christianah fired.

The EEOC dismissed the complaint. Christianah tried to hire an attorney but could not find one willing to take her case. She then filed her own federal lawsuit, asking the court to assign her a free attorney.

The court refused, concluding that the EEOC dismissal and her inability to find an attorney showed Christianah?s case was weak at best. She must continue representing herself. Chances are, her case will fold. (Adefila v. Select Specialty Hospital, No. 1:13-CV-68, MD NC, 2013)

Final note: Don?t take this case as an excuse to ignore a case in which an employee acts as her own lawyer. Always pass on any legal documents you receive and have your attorneys handle the matter.

Yahoo announces changes for Flickr, including a new Android app

Flickr

Free storage has been bumped to 1TB,  and a new version of the Android app is on the way

Yahoo is doing more than buying blog platforms today, and during an event in New York they have announced a complete revamp of Flickr. The interface of the website has changed, and now features content blocks and full bleed images instead of the thumbnail or list view of the past. In addition, registered users now have 1TB (as in a terabyte) of free storage space to keep their photos, more than any other online service. That's all well and good, but we're mostly concerned with the update to the Android app.

Last December, the Flickr app for iOS received a nice update, and today Yahoo says the Android app will be updated to the same version. That includes a UI change away from the grid we have now to a more content-focused layout resembling the website, as well as better social sharing through Facebook and Tumblr, photo editing and filters via Aviary, and photo-viewing enhancements like zooming and photo details. The update is expected to go live at any time, so if you're a user be sure to check Google Play for the notification, or try the link above.

3 Reasons You Need to Read Supplement Labels / Nutrition - FitDay

Quality control has been an issue for many dietary supplements due to the fact that the FDA does not approve dietary supplements the same way as prescription medications. There is insufficient evidence and information on the safety and effectiveness of many supplements currently on the market.

All supplement manufacturers must include on the supplement container: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."

Supplements are not conventional foods and have a "Supplement Facts" label instead of a "Nutrition Facts" label.

20_Supplements.jpg

1. Dietary supplements are not approved for safety and effectiveness by the FDA before going on the market. The manufacturer is responsible for the safety of the dietary supplement but there are no mandatory standards for the production of the supplement or the end product--only a sort of honor system. The only time the FDA steps in for safety of supplements is when there is sufficient evidence that the supplement is unsafe.

2. All supplement ingredients are not necessarily listed on the container. Supplement labeling requirements are in place, but are not regulated. Many supplements have been found to have contamination with heavy metals, or to contain much more, less, or none of the substances listed on the container.

20_FDA-teaser.jpg
WILL THIS FDA-APPROVED DRUG ACTUALLY HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?

3. Supplement manufacturers can make claims that the supplement can support health and health issues. Supplement claims and advertisements can be misleading as they're allowed to freely use dietary guidance statements and/or structure-function claims that are not necessarily true or evidence based. Food manufacturers also use these kinds of statements and claims. Supplement manufacturers can use these statements and claims to persuade consumers to use the supplement to treat certain health issues even when the statement on the container specifically says the supplement is not intended to do so. For example, a consumer may use garlic pills to treat their high blood pressure after reading "garlic supports a healthy blood pressure." The required statement on supplement containers specifically says the supplement is not intended to treat a health condition, but the structure-function claim persuades the consumer to do just that.

Studies show that taking supplements when you are not deficient provides little or no benefit and some supplements such as vitamin A, vitamin E, and vitamin C can actually be toxic in large amounts. Your body absorbs most nutrients better if they come from a food source rather than a supplement.

Most popular supplement brands are safe (since they want to stay in business), but take into account the lack of standards and regulation for the supplement industry (other than those voluntarily set by the manufacturer), possible variation of the supplement, extra cost, possible contamination, and interactions with medications or other supplements you may take.

Childhood ADHD linked to obesity

May 20, 2013 ? A new study conducted by researchers at the Child Study Center at NYU Langone Medical Center found men diagnosed as children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) were twice as likely to be obese in a 33-year follow-up study compared to men who were not diagnosed with the condition.

The study appears in the May 20 online edition of Pediatrics.

"Few studies have focused on long-term outcomes for patients diagnosed with ADHD in childhood. In this study, we wanted to assess the health outcomes of children diagnosed with ADHD, focusing on obesity rates and Body Mass Index," said lead author Francisco Xavier Castellanos, MD, Brooke and Daniel Neidich Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Child Study Center at NYU Langone. "Our results found that even when you control for other factors often associated with increased obesity rates such as socioeconomic status, men diagnosed with ADHD were at a significantly higher risk to suffer from high BMI and obesity as adults."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ADHD is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders, often diagnosed in childhood and lasting into adulthood. People with ADHD typically have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors and tend to be overly active. ADHD has an estimated worldwide prevalence of five percent, with men more likely to be diagnosed than women.

The prospective study included 207 white men diagnosed with ADHD at an average age of 8 and a comparison group of 178 men not diagnosed with childhood ADHD, who were matched for race, age, residence and social class. The average age at follow up was 41 years old. The study was designed to compare Body Mass Index (BMI) and obesity rates in grown men with and without childhood ADHD.

Results showed that, on average, men with childhood ADHD had significantly higher BMI (30.1 vs. 27.6) and obesity rates (41.1 percent vs. 21.6 percent) than men without childhood ADHD.

"The results of the study are concerning but not surprising to those who treat patients with ADHD. Lack of impulse control and poor planning skills are symptoms often associated with the condition and can lead to poor food choices and irregular eating habits," noted Dr. Castellanos. "This study emphasizes that children diagnosed with ADHD need to be monitored for long-term risk of obesity and taught healthy eating habits as they become teenagers and adults."

The research was supported by grants MH-18579 and T32 MH-067763 from the National Institute of Mental Health, grant DA-16979 from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and grant PIOF-253103 from the European Commission.

Co-authors of the study include Salvatore Mannuzza, PhD (retired); Samuele Cortese, MD, PhD, of the Phyllis Green and Randolph Cowen Institute for Pediatric Neuroscience and Verona University, Italy; Erika Proal, PhD, of the Phyllis Green and Randolph Cowen Institute for Pediatric Neuroscience and Neuroingenia, Mexico; Rachel G. Klein, PhD, and Maria A. Ramos Olazagasti, PhD, of the Child Study Center at NYU Langone Medical Center.

With all the criticism Mike Vick has absorbed during his NFL career, you?d think he?d be used to it by now.

He apparently isn?t.

Earlier this week, Vick got a little testy during an interview with Mike Missanelli of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia on the topic of those who say he doesn?t read defenses quickly enough, and that he holds onto the ball for too long.

?I?m really tempted right now to just say no comment to that because like I said a second ago, you don?t last 12 years in the NFL not being able to read the defense,? Vick said, via Sheil Kapadia of PhillyMag.com.? ?Those people who are talking and saying that are just ignorant, and they know nothing about football.? Unless they turn on the film and watch my game and see what goes on, then they?ll replace those comments with the right comments.?

Missanelli pointed out that critics who know football have made those claims.? ?But it?s incorrect,? Vick said.? ?Without getting sensitive about it, it?s incorrect.? So I?d rather not talk about it.?

We?d hate to hear what Vick would say if he were sensitive about it.? (Actually, we?d probably love to hear it.)

Vick attributes the perception of holding the ball too long to the West Coast offense the Eagles ran under Andy Reid.? ?We had a lot of deeper throws last year, which required more time,? Vick said.? ?It?s just a big difference.?

New coach Chip Kelly?s system will result in quicker throws; if Vick can make them, he?ll likely be the starter.? Kelly also has taught Vick something unrelated to throwing the ball ? how to run with it, without fumbling.

?The other day, I broke out in the pocket, and the first thing Chip told me was to tuck the football,? Vick said.? ?So I showed him how I was running with it, and he looked at it and he knocked the ball right out of my hands.? And he was like, ?Hold it like this.?? And what he told me felt comfortable.? I had a tighter grip on the football. That should secure that problem as long as I work on it.?

It remains to be seen whether Vick will undergo a Tiki-style transformation when it comes to ball security.? But if he can get rid of the ball when he needs to and keep possession of it when he has to, Vick could have a big year in 2013.

Don't let strangers in, even in Paris

When a man in work clothes showed up at her door, the Monitor's Europe bureau chief let him inside. But fortunately, he didn't get a chance to pull off a well-known Parisian scam.

I suppose that in moving from Mexico City to Paris, and feeling a sudden burst of elation for not having to worry so intently about drug and gang violence and, worst of all kidnapping, I went to the extreme.

A man knocked on the door of our temporary apartment saying he needed to check on something and asked if he could come in. He must have said what he was checking but my French, only now on its way back after lying dormant for over two decades, missed the details. He was dressed in work clothes, and I let him in.

He first said he was looking for the heater panel, then started asking all kinds of questions about who we were and how long we?d been in France. I thought this was a bit bizarre, but didn't think much of it.

Then he spotted the chimney. He opened the screen: ?Oh no, look at all of this soot.? (I had to look up the word for soot, suie, on my laptop.)

?You have a small child,? he went on. ?If she breathes this in, it could be the end. I am obligated to fix this.?

In my daze of jetlag, living out of suitcases, with a mountain of bureaucracy to tackle each day, I actually thought this man might be from the city government, and he was doing his municipal duty, for free, to make sure no Paris residents ? even foreigners, God bless France! ? breathe contaminated air.

I almost let him get to work ? until my more rational husband said, ?Let?s call the owner first.?

The owner's response was immediate: ?Get that guy out of the house now.?

I learned later that it?s a well-known scam in Paris that plumbers or electricians and other workers will come in, and tell you you need X, Y, and Z fixed. A colleague told me one man entered her house, broke a pipe, and then tried to get them to pay to fix it. I told the guardian downstairs about our visitor, and she said any communal or municipal work to be done will always be posted in the building.

Some of these scams are actually done by thieves, she said, who might rob you ? or worse. ?Don?t let anyone in your house. It could be very dangerous.?

I did learn back in elementary school not to talk to strangers, and most definitely not to let them through the front door.

But I had a momentary lapse of judgment, a good reminder that you have to be careful anywhere ? even in Paris!

Ken Venturi dies: What Jack Nicklaus says about him (+video)

Ken Venturi dies: What did Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer say about Ken Venturi, a 14-time PGA tour winner and CBS broadcaster?

By Mark Lamport-Stokes,?Reuters / May 18, 2013

Former U.S. Open champion and television broadcaster Ken Venturi, a 14-times winner on the PGA Tour, died on Friday at the age of 82 following various health complications.

Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame just 11 days ago, Venturi died in a hospital in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where he had been living for several years, according to his son, Matt.

"We all knew what a wonderful player Ken Venturi was, and how he fashioned a second successful career as an announcer. But far more important than how good he was at playing the game or covering it, Ken was my friend.? Ken was fortunate in that the game of golf gave him so much, but without question, Ken gave back far more to the game he loved than he ever gained from it," said Jack Nicklaus in a statement posted on Facebook.

The highlight of Venturi's playing career came in the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club where he overcame 100-degree temperatures and severe dehydration to win his only major championship.

He was forced to quit competitive golf because of carpal tunnel syndrome in 1967. The following year, he joined CBS television as an analyst and enjoyed a lengthy career as one of the most insightful and respected figures in the game.

"He played on the Ryder Cup in 1965, he captained the U.S. Presidents Cup in 2000," PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said last October after Venturi was voted into the World Golf Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2013.

"But to fans around the United States and around the world, he was the conduit of what PGA Tour level golf was to those fans for an incredible 35-year broadcast career which spanned many, many careers on the PGA Tour.

"Ken Venturi was a fixture to the game of golf for fans everywhere in terms of his ability to analyze the game and excite fans about the play they were watching."

Venturi, a San Francisco native who learned to play golf at Harding Park, described his induction into the Hall of Fame as "just an honour" when speaking on a conference call from Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.

"The greatest reward in life is to be remembered and I thank the World Golf Hall of Fame for remembering me," Venturi said.

"I was taught by Byron Nelson and I asked him one time, 'How could I ever repay you for all you've done for me?' He said, 'Ken, be good to the game and give back.'

"And that's what I've tried to do because I've said many times, the world will never remember you for what you take from it, but only what you leave behind."

Arnold Palmer released the following statement: "I was very sorry to hear of Ken's passing. He was a friend and an opponent and I had the utmost respect for him throughout his career. He was a great competitor and the golf world will miss him."

May consumer sentiment rises to highest in nearly six years

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Consumer sentiment rebounded in early May to the highest level in nearly six years as Americans felt better about their financial and economic prospects, particularly among upper-income households, a survey released on Friday showed.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment rose to 83.7 from 76.4 in April, topping economists' expectations for 78.

It was the highest level since July 2007.

The barometer of current economic conditions jumped to 97.5 from 89.9, the highest since October 2007, while the gauge of consumer expectations gained to 74.8 from 67.8.

More consumers gave a favorable view of their personal finances than in anytime since 2007, with the largest gains among households in the upper third of income levels. More respondents also thought the economy would continue to improve in the year ahead.

Shopping plans were similarly encouraging, with the gauge of buying attitudes for durable goods rising to 148 from 137.

The survey's one-year inflation expectation was unchanged at 3.1 percent, while the survey's five-to-10-year inflation outlook edged down to 2.8 percent from 2.9 percent.

Why Microsoft's Stock Is At A Five-Year High - Business Insider

At first glance, things could not be going worse for Microsoft.

Its long-dreaded nightmare scenario is playing out. The PC industry as we've known it is collapsing. PC sales fell 14% in the first quarter, according to IDC, the worst ever drop in history.

Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system is accelerating the collapse, says IDC. The new tile-interface is scaring consumers. Microsoft is scrambling to fix Windows 8 to address these concerns.

And even if Microsoft fixes Windows 8, it could be too late.

Its biggest rivals ? Apple and Google ? have taken complete control of the next major computing platforms. Apple owns tablet computing and a big chunk of smartphones. Google owns most of smartphones.

Microsoft is trying to make a dent in these markets but its being met with a wave of consumer indifference. It has 3.2% of the smartphone market and 3.7% of the tablet market.

Microsoft's normally listless stock has seen all of this terrible news and made a sharp move, soaring 26% this year, reaching a five-year high.

Wait. What?

That's right, Microsoft is trading just over $34 a share right now, despite the fact that the worst fears for the Windows franchise have been confirmed.

What gives?

For the longest time, the destruction of Windows has been hanging over Microsoft's head. Now that it's here, and really, it's not so bad, investors seem to feel better about the company.

Last quarter, Microsoft reported $18.8 billion in revenue, an 8% increase year-over-year. Its Windows division did $4.6 billion in revenue, which is about flat year-over-year. (These revenue numbers are non-GAAP. They exclude Windows upgrade revenues counted in the quarter.)

The Windows business is flat, despite the overall PC market falling, because Microsoft's Surface tablet, plus licenses to businesses made up for the shortfall. Microsoft's Windows business also isn't entirely tied to consumer PC sales anymore. It sells to corporations in multi-year deals.

The reason Microsoft's overall revenue grew is that it's now a diversified business. While CEO Steve Ballmer has regrettably repeatedly emphasized the importance of Microsoft's consumer businesses, the truth is that Servers and Tools, and the Business Division (home to the Office productivity suite) are driving Microsoft these days. Servers and Tools was up 11%. The Business Division was up 8%.

Earlier this year, Microsoft's stock got a nice boost when hedge fund ValueAct announced that it was going to invest $2 billion in Microsoft's stock.

ValueAct CEO Jeffery Ubben explained the investment by saying, "In three to five years, which is our time horizon, we?ll stop talking about PC cycles and instead talk about Microsoft as the largest cloud-computing company in the world."

A lot of funds have bought into Microsoft in the past and been burned. It's possible ValueAct will get burned, as well. It's also possible that this pop is a temporary blip for Microsoft.

But it looks like Microsoft is actually being increasingly viewed as a strong enterprise company with massive cash flow that can handle a weakening global PC market.

Turns out that, so far, anyway, Microsoft's nightmare scenario isn't that bad after all.

Computer Games May Improve 'Chemo Brain' in Cancer Patients

Doing computer puzzles may improve thinking skills in women who've undergone chemotherapy, according to a Stanford study.

In the study, breast cancer survivors who suffered from cognitive impairments due to chemotherapy, sometimes called chemo brain, showed enhanced cognitive functions after three months of playing online games, according to the researchers. The games targeted various cognitive skills such as verbal fluency and memory.

While physical side effects of chemotherapy such as fatigue, nausea and hair loss are well-known and common, many cancer patients also experience cognitive problems that affect their quality of life. Research shows that chemotherapy can change the brain, and damage cognitive functions.

The study included 41 breast cancer patients who were randomly assigned to either a group that completed computer exercises four times a week for three months, or a control group. Exercises included mentally rotating objects, word finding, route planning and puzzle solving.

The women who played the games showed markedly larger improvements in word finding, thinking speed and verbal memory, compared to the control group.

The women who played the games also reported fewer everyday cognitive function problems, according to the study published this month in the journal Clinical Breast Cancer.

The findings suggest that cancer patients with cognitive deficits might benefit from behavioral and non-pharmacological interventions such as brain training exercises, researchers said.

Cannes festival hit by $1 million jewel heist

Jewel thieves have stolen $1 million worth of Chopard jewelry from a hotel right off the Croisette, and while the theft being called by Deadline one of the "biggest heists to go down in recent Cannes history," it's not actually?that?unexpected.?

RELATED: Cannes, Bucking the Trend, Applauds 'The Beaver'

The Hollywood Reporter?reported that the jewelry,?set to be loaned to celebrities for their red carpet appearances,?was stolen was stolen from a= Chopard employee's hotel room in the Novotel, and that?"whole safe was taken out of the wall in the hotel room."?Police are also telling?THR?that the heist "may be an inside job" and are questioning hotel employees.?According to Le Monde?the crime occurred at?5 a.m. The festival itself was quick to note that their top prize the Palme d'Or, which is supplied by Chopard, is safe, according to the AFP.?

RELATED: Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac' Is Now the 'Where's Waldo' of Hollywood Smut

Burglaries at the festival and on the French Riviera itself do not lack historical context. Let us not forget, as Scott Feinberg of?The Hollywood Reporter points out on Twitter, Alfred Hitchcock's?To Catch a Thief, which starred Cary Grant as a cat burglar took place in that locale. And there are real-life examples too.?

RELATED: Lars Von Trier Acts Out at Cannes: 'I Understand Hitler'

Earlier this year the AFP reported that thieves had stolen a million euros worth of luxury watches from the store on the Croisette's promenade in Cannes. In 2009 armed robbers stole millions of euros worth of jewelry from a Cartier shop in the city.

RELATED: You Will Now Be Jealous You're Not in Cannes

Last year at the festival two Senegalese soccer stars reported??400,000 worth of wristwatches and jewelry and???30,000 in cash stolen.?In their guide to the festival, Indiewire advises: "Also beware of pickpockets. We know of regulars who, after leaving a window open, have had all of their belongings stolen from their rented hotels and flats while they were away." Take this as you may wish, but back in 2010 Lindsay Lohan claimed her passport had been stolen at Cannes, rendering her unable to go to court.?

RELATED: Cannes Downgrades Lars Von Trier To 'Persona Non Grata' Status

Perhaps one of the more ironic parts of this recent theft?and one that has not escaped the media and the jokesters on Twitter?is that it happened as Sofia Coppola's movie about teenager burglar's stealing from stars,?The Bling Ring, screened at the festival. Somehow we don't see Emma Watson being?that?method.?

At the Google I/O keynote in San Francisco, Google VP Vic Gundotra demonstrated a ton of new features for the company's social network, Google+. Among these is a bevy of photographic capabilities, chiefly Google Photo Highlights. If you've ever uploaded a massive cache of photos to a social network and had to sort through to pick out the best ones, you may appreciate this.

Pat Healy?s positive drug test costs him $130,000

Pat Healy made a memorable cross-over from Strikeforce at UFC 159. He submitted Jim Miller and won two bonuses to steal the show at the April event. Unfortunately, he also tested positive for marijuana after the fight. His fight result has been changed to no-contest, and he will have to give up the bonuses that totaled $130,000.

Healy both tweeted about the positive test and released a statement. He will be suspended for 90 days. Healy attributed the positive test to a night out with friends a month before the fight.

Marijuana's acceptance in the United States is growing. Medical marijuana laws are becoming more common, and it's legal in two states. However, it's still a banned substance that state commissions test for, and fighters know this going into their bouts. Healy apologized in his statement, and said he should have been a better role model.

A Mom Tried to Sell Her Three-Year-Old Son on Craigslist

A bicycle. An old jailbroken iPhone. Maybe used furniture. Some free dirt. Those are the type of things you expect to buy off Craigslist. You definitely don't expect a Mom to offer up her three-year-old son on the seedy but useful classifieds website. But that's just what Stephanie Redus did. She used Craiglist to get her son adopted by a new family.

The Craigslist ad stated:

Hi, I'm trying to adopt out my 3yr old son. I'm not in a good place in my life and don't feel like I can care for him properly but I don't know where to start. If you or know anyone who is interested in caring for him, please let me know. I'm a single mom and can't do this.

Thanks, Desperate.

If Redus, a 29-year-old single mother, didn't feel equipped to continue being a mother to her son, that's totally her decision to make. But to put the adoption alert out on Craigslist? Um. Yeah. The only thing worse would be if Redus tried to pawn him off at a Flea Market with old stamps, broken typewriters and handmade jewelry. It's clear that a woman who would do this to her son needs a bit of help.

Redus, who admitted to posting the ad, told the police that she has been depressed and suffers from anxiety but hasn't been taken her medication because... she's pregnant with another child. She's been charged with "advertising for placement of a child", which apparently is a misdemeanor (for now). The three-year-old is now in care with a relative as Redus awaits her day in court. In the land before time ? because early man?hadn't?yet invented swatch watches ? our knuckle-dragging ancestors lacked many things like bows, baskets, and trapper-keepers.? Indeed, you may wonder how the species survived without Tupperware, pedometers and koozies, but times were even darker than that - literally.? Until, that is, one momentous, undocumented moment.? Now, Rio Grande sends you back in time ? way back ? to be a part of arguably the greatest achievement in human history: the discovery of fire!? Can you lead your small tribe of cavemen to grow and prosper, being the first to patent the roaring flame?? Can you do better than our distant cousins?? Well, let?s hope so, considering that their IQ was smaller than the number of fingers you have on one hand. ?And s'mores-eaters and Kumbaya-singers throughout history will memorialize you forever more!

How it Plays

Cavemen: The Quest for Fire is a card-drafting, tableau-building game of prehistoric inventing, with a smattering of bidding and resource management.? As leader of a band of hunter-gatherers, you will recruit tribesmen, provide shelter, hunt and forage for food, and better your little clan?s lives by developing the bow & arrow, baskets, and other labor saving devices in a golden era of convenience not seen again by anyone until 1950's housewives. You begin as a small, close-knit band with your leader, one hunter, a cave, and some food and teeth (the game?s two resources).? These are laid out in your personal playing area.? The starting player is determined randomly and she takes the conch token ? an integral component of the game.? Then a number of cards from the deck are placed face-up within reach of everyone.? Cards are cavemen, beasts, caves, or inventions.? On your turn you will have the opportunity to draft a card from this central pool or collect resources.
While even a Neanderthal can understand the cards, they do have several icons to get used to.? Cavemen are classified as hunters, thinkers, elders, or explorers.? Each category is identified by a unique symbol at the top of the card.? The cost in food or teeth to recruit that caveman is specified at the right.? Finally, the left of the card indicates how many points that caveman adds to your tribe?s scores in hunting, inventing, foraging, and/or exploration, which also all have a distinctive icon.

Beasts provide food and teeth.? The right of the card states how many hunting points your tribe must possess in order to take down the creature.? The left of the card stipulates how much food and teeth you collect for doing so.? Caves increase your tribe?s maximum size. ?Your starting home is only big enough to house four cavemen.? Inventions round out the card variety.? These developments require certain inventing scores to acquire and then provide your tribe with permanent, special abilities or benefits.

Turns are very structured and simple.? After replenishing the central card pool, everyone gets a chance to bid teeth for the conch.? The player with the conch gets to take two actions every round.? You also must hold the conch in order to invent fire, so this phase can be an interesting one in the late game as everyone gets closer to acquiring enough inventing points to build fire.? The main drawback to possessing the conch is that you must pay one food per tribe member during the next phase ? feeding.? Meanwhile, all others need only spend one food total.
After feeding your people, the action phase is next.? Beginning with the conch holder, each player gets one action with the potential to draft a card or collect resources by hunting or foraging.? You can recruit a caveman by paying the indicated cost in food or teeth and adding her to your tribe ? presuming that you have enough space in your cave(s).? You can hunt a beast for food and/or teeth as long as your current hunting score allows it.? Be careful though. ?Hunting is dangerous work and you may lose a tribe member as a casualty.? A safer way to gather food is to forage simply by collecting an amount of food equal to your tribe?s combined foraging score.

You can also explore to add a cave if one is available.? If you have an explorer, it?s free; otherwise you?ll need to pay teeth.? The final action you may perform is to invent.? If there is an invention card available and you have the required aggregate inventing score, you may pick that up and add it to your tableau,?benefiting?from its effect when applicable.

When all players have taken their action, the conch holder gets to perform one more.? Then someone, usually the player to the conch-holder's right, will discard down to three cards in the central pool and re-stock it based on the number of players.? Rounds continue in this fashion until the fire card is available and the conch holder has the requisite inventing score to obtain it for the win.? At that point, you may want to continue until the invention of?aloe vera, silvadene, and bacitracin.
Roaring Flame?? Or Cooling Embers? There's an old saying, "Don't play with fire!" ?It can be dangerous. ?After all, some of histories greatest tragedies involved fire: the Burning of Rome in 62 AD, the Great London Fire of 1666, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, that time when Michael Jackson's hair ignited when filming his?1984 Pepsi commercial.? But as long as you can deal with the moral and ethical conundrums of the destruction you're just about to unleash upon the world, it's totally safe to play Cavemen: The Quest for Fire - and even fun.

Perhaps the most important thing to know about Cavemen is that it's kind of like when you throw a log on a campfire and sparks fly everywhere.? It is quite random.? As a card game, of course, that's not surprising.? While you can still work towards a general strategy, it is way more tactical in nature.? You have to be ready to take advantage of the cards that come up, rather than wait around for one or two that you may actually desire.? While the luck element can be frustrating for serious strategy gamers, it's appropriate for this title.? Namely because Cavemen is light-hearted, relaxed, and very accessible to more casual gamers.

Aside from the unpredictable nature of when certain cards appear in the central pool for?availability, the more impactful arbitrary element is with hunting. ?After taking a beast card and collecting the food and teeth, you must resolve for casualties. ?To do so, you simply draw the top card from the deck. ?All cards, other than fire, have a stone count from 1-5. ?If the stone count on the card you drew matches that of anyone in your tribe, you lose a caveman. ?It does not have to be the tribe member whose count matches the card - you may choose anyone except your starting leader. ?However, this luck is two-fold. ?Not only is?casualty?resolution itself completely random, but the card you drew to determine that is discarded. ?If it's one of the nifty invention cards that could prove really handy, it's now out of play until you exhaust the draw deck and have to reshuffle the discard pile to begin again.

While Cavemen: The Quest for Fire may be random, there are still opportunities to pursue a general plan and experiment with some different combinations.? The biggest contingency you must prepare for is feeding your tribe.? You will frequently discover food supplies are not always in abundance.? And if you can?t feed your people, one of them starves to death.? Now, sometimes that?s not a bad option, despite how heartless it may sound.? This is a dinosaur-eat-man world, after all.? However, utilizing forced starvation as a regular practice?isn't?a wise plan, as you won?t be able to accumulate enough inventing points which are required to make fire and win the game.

You have two choices in acquiring food ? hunting or foraging.? Therefore, you can go after hunters who kill for food.? Not only can you score some savory brachiosaurus baby back ribs, but you?ll often gain much needed teeth, as well.? But while you can potentially earn more food through hunting, you also risk losing a tribe member during the heat of the chase.? But hunters don?t contribute anything else, so instead you may want to concentrate on recruiting explorers and elders to forage.? While you may not collect as much food as you can with hunting, elders and explorers provided other skills to help your society.? Plus foraging is much safer ? as long as you watch out for the dark red berries.

Thinkers also provide an interesting decision.? With an inventing score of +2, they?re very attractive options (necessities), considering you only need 7, 8, or 9 points to obtain fire (depending on the number of players).? However, if you load up on too many of them - especially early on - you?ll find it difficult to get food and teeth as all of their scholarly matriculating proves of little practical benefit for day-to-day survival.? Basically, they?re Neolithic liberal arts grads.

These choices are fun to experiment with in discovering which classes of cave people work best with others and in what ratios. That said, there are two potential issues. First, you?ll likely find yourself locking into a formulaic combination. That is, if the cards cooperate. Therefore secondly, when they do, many times there is an obvious or optimal action that you really need to take. ?Especially when you're running low on food, you'll need to hunt or forage.

Overall, you can?t ignore food, so hunters will be an early priority. You have to have a least one or two thinkers to form a solid inventing base. An early explorer could prove critical to find a free cave so that you can expand the size of your little clan without spending precious teeth. Then Elders are solid late game additions to acquire food and help with inventing. Yes, there can be some slight differences and you may develop a varied preference, but you?re likely to lock in on that for most games when you find it works.

Consequently, inventions bring the spice to Cavemen. ?These cards provide neat effects that can really boost your hunting, foraging, and inventing scores so that you don't have to rely completely on cave people for everything. ?In fact, maximizing combinations of these benefits are usually the key to victory. ?There's one that gives you +2 inventing if you have one of each cavemen type. ?Another gives you immunity from hunting casualties. ?Yet others give you food during the feeding phase, double the value of your teeth for bidding, and even the ability to sacrifice a tribe member for teeth! ?The tableau-building component really shines with the use of invention cards to accentuate not only your tribe's current make-up, but to chain upon each other, as well.

Indeed sometimes one player can do so well that the others will not be able to stop her when fire shows up in the central pool. ?While this kind of runaway leader issue may sound odd in a card game of this nature, it nonetheless can pop up. ?If someone is able to efficiently engineer their tableau with the necessary invention score, generate just enough food to avoid starvation, and gain two or more teeth every round, the endgame will be a lackluster conclusion played on autopilot. ?We've had a couple games in which the winner was obvious several rounds before the end. ?One player would have enough teeth, in addition to earning more every turn, to ensure he would win the conch as soon as fire appeared. ?Yes, that's the goal of the game and reveals the skill (and luck) of that player, but it makes for an anti-climactic experience - and not very fun when it happens. There's simply no way to stop a leader in such a position, nor are there any catch-up mechanisms.

Other than the runaway leader element (which does not happen every session), the other characteristics mesh well together for a nice family style game. ?The randomness, formulaic tendencies, and lack of interaction will limit Cavemen's replay value for more seasoned and/or serious hobby gamers. ?But for more casual audiences, it's just right. ?Its mostly straight-forward and individual turns move quickly so that there's little downtime. ?It can go a bit long for what it is with a fifth player, so I personally recommend playing with two to four. ?The only scaling element is with the number of cards available in the central pool, and it works fine with two, three, or four players.

The production quality is solid, as I would expect from Rio Grande. The cards are sturdy. Unfortunately they have those black borders which tend to take, and subsequently show, wear easier. The conch, teeth, and food tokens are a nice weight. I do question the design of the food tokens, however; they are shaped like drumsticks with a protruding, skinny bone "handle." I will be surprised if one or two aren't broken off over the course of playing the game. By far the most striking feature of this title's components is the unique artwork. ?All of the cards feature clay models that are then photographed in a mini-panorama. ?To save on time, each beast, cave, and caveman type have standard models and poses which are then colored and/or dressed individually to create variety. ?But the various inventions are all original. ?The result is fresh and comical, engendering a certain playfulness which only adds to its family accessibility. ?All in all, the game's lower-end price point, along with the amount and quality of its components, make for a good value.

Cavemen: The Quest for Fire is a nice, family-style card game.? Despite tendencies to have obvious plays, there are still opportunities to make some tough and tense decisions.? Just be aware that randomness is a significant factor.? ?While there a few ways to experiment in this title, you will likely discover an ideal strategy that works best after a few sessions.? To be sure, this is not uncommon in many card games.? In any event, there is some fun in the challenge to create a balance of tribesmen and inventions in which you can adequately feed your people, allow for growth, and gain ?science.?? Cavemen is a light, pre-historic romp that still offers choices and shines best when bringing gamers together with their families, kids, and casual friends.
