University cheers on Luton?s sport stars

The University?s cheerleading squad performed at the awards ceremony, held at Vauxhall Recreation Club on Thursday, 22 March, which celebrated sporting achievement and excellence in Luton.

The Young Sports Woman of the Year award was also sponsored by the University, and one of the University?s elite athletes, GB bobsleigh star Antoe Walters, was shortlisted for the Sports Man of the Year award.

The Young Sports Woman of the Year was won by Sabrina Bakare, with Louisa Essam in second place and Abby Gee taking third. David Clarke, captain of the England blind football team and guest of honour at the awards, presented the trophy.

The University?s Sport Development Manager, Julia Lines, was there. She said: ?It was another fantastic awards evening and we were really proud of Antoe and the show our cheerleaders put on.

?We are pleased to continue working alongside Luton Sports Network to promote sport in our local community.?

Luton Sports Network is promotes awareness of local sports clubs and sporting events, and provides grant funding to local sports clubs, individual athletes and coaches.

It seeks to increase awareness and participation in local sport and active recreation, improve health and well being, create stronger communities through sport and improve education through participation.

The awards are held annually and decided by nominations by members of the public.
